I recently bought an LCD monitor which I'm using with the digital connection. In digital mode the only monitor setting that can be changed is brightness. Doesn't that make it impossible to calibrate the monitor?

you should be able to do from windows -- using colorific at the least . many panels come with a color calibration program .. if not use this http://www.colorific.com/

there are better programs also to do this ..

My monitor came with software but I've never had good results with a software only approach. If I get a hardware calibrator I know I will get a good profile but if I can't adjust rgb then I won't be able to calibrate the monitor.

well i cant speak for the monitor you have -- but my sgi lcd monitors have NO adjustment what so ever - its all done with software (they come with a hardware calibrator though -- which sets the software) and works fine .. my viewsonic has both on the panel and software - i use the panel adjustments and lock the software (with a very good calibration system which we use on all our monitors in house) ..

you should be able to use software and get a good results ...

hi Michelle pal.. smile.gif

Is there anything wrong w/ your LCD that you have to adjust the colors ??

I have the NEC MultiSync LCD 1555v 15" screen and works great for me.
I had to adjust the colors (as best as possible) using the onscreen route
and it took a while for me to match a "best" guess, but I'm happy w/ my
results and I haven't had it change on me since.
.
.
I must admit, that it took a little while getting use to it, because it's not the
same as an CRT tube - richer colors etc. but that's the way LCD is, ..not
so rich in color, but still great for video.

And, I use mine at the fullest res of 1024x768. Even when I shoot some
video of the screen w/ my TRV-22, it looks pretty good - no Interlace smile.gif

Anyways, I was just curious about yours. Hope you didn't mine my input.

It's fine for video where my needs are not exacting. The calibration is for printing digital photos. Both the monitor and the printer need to be calibrated.

I assume you use hardware calibration if it's a good system. I don't understand what you mean by 'lock the software'. My Samsung monitor comes with Natural Color software that gives you gamma calibration using a method that is similar to what Photoshop uses. I don't see how a hardware calibrator could be used in conjunction with this software. I guess your monitor comes with software that is more useful or am I missing something?

I called ColorVision whose CRT calibrator worked well for me and is within my budget. They said their software is capable of handling monitors that don't have color control.
