I have been making VCD's with Linux for some time, but I have just hit a small problem.

I have just tried to make an XVCD with a low bitrate to fit more than 80 mins onto a disk, I used a couple of the windoze bitrate calculators (under WINE) to give a suitable rate, (they both concuured on a suitable bitrate) When I finished Transcoding and tried to burn the VCD it all looks OK from a file size POV, but the burning software tells me it will not fit onto a disk.

I have transcoded with a lower rate and got it to fit, but the quality is poor. Any idea why the bitrate must be lower than the bitrate calcs suggest?

You can fit 800 MB on an 80 minute cd-r. the amount of minutes dont matter just aslong as you dont exceed 800 MB. and then you have to burn the file as an non compliant vcd, using nero burning ron or vcd easy.

Hi Thanks for that,

Yes I am aware that I can fit more than 80 Mins (actually 703 Mb) on an (x)VCD, hence my comments about bitrate calculators.

I have performed this many times with Tmpgenc and Nero, however, I am not usng Windoze any longer. I have used Tmpgenc from Linux (Mandrake 9.1) under Wine, but I find it a little unreliable (not to mention slow). and the Native Linux burning tools work just fine, so no need for Nero.

I use either Kavi2svcd or arson to burn with Linux, both work fine. It is the bitrate calculation I hsve trouble with.

The bitrate calculators come up with 930Kbps for a film of the length I have, but trial and error found that 850 Kbs (ABR) was the max I could get and still fit on a disk. I am confused by this discrepancy,

Actually, I realise I was talking tosh, after a conversation on another thread I realise my problem is not one of the bitrate calculators getting it wrong, but really that my burning program is throwing a fit at files over the FAT32 limit of 703Mb on an 80 minute disk. not to mention my own stupitiy at not remembering the limit on VCD's is nearer the raw data limit of 800Mb. (DOH!)

So, I sould re-phrase my question to...

Does anyone know how to get Arson to write upto the 800 Mb raw limit?
