DVD to DIVX with ffmpegx

I am trying to process a DVD ripped with DVDBackup to DIVX. I would like to put the whole thing on to one CD but that may be asking for too much give quality wise. I know there are 4 Titles; the first title is a black box.

I processed Title 2 with the following settings:

1213 Kbit/s
Ratio 2.35:1
Framerate "NTSC Film"

I get VERY choppy video with of block artifacts. I am using mencoder. I tried using the ffmpegx encoder but it says that the VIDEO_TS folder is the "wrong format".

I used the "DVD to Divx" guide from the web site to do it.

One other question: the guide says that I need to hit the 'Calc Time' button. How does one discern the time of a Title within the DVD?

Let me know if any of these questions need to be clarified.

look up the movie, it will give you the run time of the video.

or its on the back of the dvd case.

Here is my experience with dvd's. I first use dvd backup to get rid of the codes. then dvd2one to get rid of all the stuff you don't need. Plus dvd to one will get the movie titles out right. Then you will need the FFmpegx patch from www.versiontracker.com or macupdate to allow ffmpegX to convert mpeg2 vop files. Then simple get ffmpegx working on the 4 vop files. The last is usually the titles.

It is best to use the vop files on your HD rather than DVD player cause it takes less time and saves you dvd player from constantly starting and stopping (wear and tear).

After you can use 'ffmpegX' or 'split me' to join the converted vop - divx files.
