This question was recently posted in uk.media.dvd by someone else and I think it deserves a wider audience:
"If there was only one HD disc format, would you buy a HD disc player right now?"
What I want to do is dispel the myth that competing formats are the only reason why people are not buying HD disc players.

How many movies and TV shows do you have in your collection:
1. none
2. 1 - 50
3. 51 - 100
4. 101 - 200
5. 201 - 500
6. 501 - 1000
7. 1000+
I'm in the 51 - 100 range, though I've yet to actually count them all. At least 2/3 of them are movies/TV shows for my kids.

A neighboring property caught fire recently and for one fleeting moment I was forced to think about this. If your home was on fire, what is the first piece of equipment you would save?
1) The PC
2) That expensive new plasma/LCD screen
3) HD/BD/DVD player/recorder
4) A-V receiver
5) Other
In my case it was the PC as it has months of work stored on it. Everything else is replaceable. Don't spend too long thinking about this as in real life you wouldn't have the opportunity.

Everyone buys and watches their favorite movies a time or two, the best ones even more. But for those who have bought some TV series, how many can actually justify the purchase?
1. I'm a Trekkie. I own every DVD and watch them over and over, and still watch 6 hours of Trek a day on Spike too!
2. Easily, I've watched every episode of everything I own multiple times.
3. Watched everything exactly once. I should've just rented.
4. I own just about every series ever put on TV, but nothing ever sees the inside of a player. At least renting I would have spent less money to not watch them..
5. I Netflix, never bought anything in my life..
6. What's a TV?
I'm curious on exactly that, how many people who've bought TV series on DVD can actually justify the purchase. Even once for no commercials and in order isn't too terrible, but renting is a lot less for watching once, so it's not that great of a purchase either. Something similar may have been asked before though, I only did a cursory search

Buying tech equipment and toys are no longer always a fun expereince. A lot of new technologies never really work - happened - supported. Electronics widgets break early. and often and won't work with each others are become very common. So there re people who refuse to buy a certain brand because of past expereince. It will be an eye-opener to see which brands are the worse among the worse!
Poll likes :
I will never buy from :
GE/RCA [ ]
Fuji [ ]
Sony [ ]
Epson [ ]
Panasonic [ ]
Microsoft [ ]
Dell [ ]
CVS store brand [ ]

Do you use high-definition players and buy HD movies on discs?
1 yes, I use HD-DVD
2 yes, I use BD (BluRay Disc)
3 yes, I have & use both HD-DVD & BD
4 yes, I use WMV-HD only because me & TGPO love Microsoft and our DRM-infected computers
5 no, I use standard DVD-Video and that is what I like & prefer
6 no, I use standard DVD-Video, but only because HD-DVD & BD are too expensive, or because I'm waiting until there is one universal high-def disc format

Thanks derex but I've done a lot of bluray/hddvd polls this year already.
I think I'll start one up again as we approach the holiday shopping season come late November..

How much do you care about VH poll results?
*A lot. If I voted in a minority I flog myself for hours.
*Somewhat. If I voted in a minority I reevaluate my position, but don't necessarily change my mind.
*A little. Polls are fun and it's interesting to see how different people vote. But it has no effect on my position.
*Not at all. Polls are a stupid waste of time.
*Only if there's a TGPO or Yoda option.
