DVD9 to 1 DVDr with only 2 programs, NO reencoding !
This is a very short guide, to copy ONLY the movie with subs to a DVDr
It took me 2 days to figure this out and its my first guide so be gentle,
What i wanted was to only rip out the movie with the subs without reencoding, demuxing, remuxing etc etc.
Most DVD9 are full of crap, most of the time the movie is only between 4,5 and 5 gig, with a little bit of creative thinking it must be possible to put this on a DVDr.
Personely I only want to see the movie, I don't care about all the extra's and menu's
The following guide will provide you with a DVDr with only the movie and your desired subs
Wat do we need;
DVDdecrypter
IFOedit091 (very important, not 095)
1 - Ok, rip the movie with DVDdecrypter, important is that you only select the movie in DVDdecrypter
I'm not going to explain how DVDdecryter works, there are many guides about DVDdec.
When thats done, you wil have to open ifoedit091, i know ifoedit looks complicated but we are only going to use a few options without understanding all that editing around it.
At the moment we have a number of vobs and only 1 ifo, thats the one we need,
1 - so open VTS_xx_0.ifo in ifoedit091. (The one you ripped ofcourse)
2 - Goto VOBextra and make the same ajustments as i did (3), Create new VIDEO_TS.IFO and VTS_01_0.IFO is the most important thing.
and thats why we use this verion of ifoedit and not 095. 095 does not create a new video_ts.ifo and we need that file to make a compliant DVD.
A little about the contance of a DVD, You wil always need a dir called VIDEO_TS, in that dir there are mostly vob files and ifo files
Vob files are "containers" witch contain movie, sound ect, IFO files are "directors" they tell the player what to play.
The main IFO file is VIDEO_ts.ifo without this file the player can't play.
IFOedit091 creates a video_ts.ifo, and that is exactly what we need,
4 -Ok, press ok and select what you need and get rid of al the nonsens audio and subtitles (yeah yeah i'm dutch, )
5 - Strip it,
6 - Ok the next screen is important, select them all. Because we have no menu's or somethig else in the vobs we decryted
so what you see here is only the movie (in this example we have only 1 ID, but there can be more, remember select them all)
7 - Strip it, again,
This is going to take a little while, but not as long as decoding......
You wil get a message that VIDEO_TS.IFO does not exsists, no probleem just click ok ifoedit creates one for you.
8 - Ok, we are almost done The last thing you will have to do is click on the buttom GET VTS sectors to correct your IFO files
(see 2e screen)
Thats it !!
Close ifoedit, you will now have a dir with some ifo and vob files, it should be small enough to fit on a DVDr, check it out with powerDVD or winDVD if it wants to play.
If it does, burn the VIDEO_TS dir with NERO to your DVDr (there are guides to tell you how to play from HD and how to burn with NERO)
Ok, like I said it works for MOST DVD9, not all of them !!! some movies are simply too big (suggestion: use dvdXcopy, ). Ohhh right it's all FREEware, except for nero,
Thx to the makers of DVDdecryter and IFOedit

Cavee,
I have not ever ripped a DVD because of the sheer involvment required. I was just happy doing caps. Your guide seems easy enough to give a shot too. Just need to learn how to rip using DVD-decrypter....
How many minutes (approximately) can you get on the DVDR this way??
thx

Hmm, that depends . the bitrate is responseble how big the movie gets. But i've succesly ripped about 6 movies like this, and the biggist one was 120 mins. But if you want to put a really big movie on 1 DVDr you will have to use one of the other guides, but then you will have to reencode the movie. The only thing i'm doing here is get rid off the extra's like menu's, extra sounds ect, so it wil fit on 1 dvdr.

Good guide Cavie
Ive been doing it this way for a while and i think you will find that not many movies come out small enough to fit on one dvd-r
Ive backed up many many DVD's and only a very small percentage will be small enough to do this way
Ive only had 2 or 3 that would fit

ThX, see above i already found 6
But you are right, most new films don't fit. I was looking only to backup the movie and couln't find it anywhere, so i tried it on my own,

The ifoedit94 and 95 both work well with this also. Now just load it up and select createnewifo from the main page. Select the first vob file in the program and it will locate the chapters and audio. Then finish it off with Get VTS Sectop, make region free and disable the program. Burn away. I have done about 20 DVDs this way. I usually rip the dolby and dts audio if available. The subtitles I have had some problem with but I figure it can be fixxed if I were to copy the colors and stuff from the original ifo. I may learn to do this in the future.

Thank you very much for this guide, it is the first encoded movie that I have backed up properly.
I had pretty much decided that I was going to have to get dvdxcopy or something before I could do that but not anymore.
Thanks a million!

no way in heck this guide would work for the likes of movies as the green mile, titanic and other movies that are 3 hours or more long. basicly this guide is for movies that are on dvd9 but the actual movie is dvd5.....

I never had to run my movies through IFOEdit from DVD Decrypter and they worked fine.

If your DVD has multiple sound tracks or subtitles (extreme example: LOTR extended version), you might want to get rid of the ones you don't need. I don't know about DVDdecrypter but in SmartRipper I go to the Stream Editing tab and deactivate all the streams I don't care about. For European DVDs (usually multi-language and with more than one subtitles stream) this can gain a good bit of space.

Not exactly, there are a lot of movies that are a little to big to fit on 1 dvdr. I'm just getting rid of all the extra sounds and menu's to save space. If the movie is about 5 gig and it has extra sound tracks you can get this om 1 dvdr by losing the extra sound.
But you are right big movies don't fit, but thats exacty what i'm saying at the end of the guide,

If you ONLY select the movie in DVDdecrypter it will not play in a stand alone player. You will need some more files, like video_ts.ifo ect. This is what IFOedit will do for you.

Yea you're right, I'm an idiot. I completely forgot how I did it.
But I never had to do the VTS thing, I always read that you should (also I've always read you shouldn't start sentences with "but").

For bigger movies use this guide:
http://www.doom9.org/ -> Guides -> Split a DVD to 2 DVD-Rs
Follows the same idea as Cavie's but uses the split disc option...

yep the movie starts right up.
Another cool thing about this is I backed up Jason X, and it no longer has a pause where the layer used to change.

Excellent guide, I have been looking on how to do just this for about two weeks. Funny that no one posted something like this before. I have about 15 movies that are less than 4.3gb, monsters inc, legally blonde, etc.
good guide, thanks a lot.

I'm still trying to find a movie I can try this on. I tried to do Sleep Hollow which was 105 minutes. The final files ended up bring 5.0G. According to my uneducated calculations, it seems like movies that are about 88 minutes are doable.

I don't know if maybe I'm just doing something different, but I've used this method on longer movies. I just finished Spiderman, and it fit just fine. I think if the actual size of the files is less than 4.37 gigs, then it shouldn't matter how long the movie is.
