DVD Resizing Issue Help Needed

I'll be getting my DVD burner in the next couple of weeks and there are some Films that i have on already on DVD that i want to backup onto DVD-R.

I'll use SCREAM (UK PAL) as an example because if i can get this sorted out i can use it on the rest of the films that i have.

Ok here go's

Scream has a Apsect ratio 2.35.1 Letterbox widescreen, now when i watch it on my Toshiba 28" widescreen Dolby Prologic and i use the button on the remote control to take of the borders, they do not be completely removed because of this letterbox format.

Now i know that this is the way it's meant to be watched, but i prefer to watch any film without any borders and luckly i only have this problem with about 5 DVD's of the 150 that i own.

I want to change the Aspect Ratio from the 2.35.1 letterbox to 1.85.1 widescreen thus allowing me to remove the borders completely when watching on my 28" TV

So what i'm asking is, if it's possible to re-n-code the movie using this option.

I prefer to use DVD2SVCD because of the multipass VBR, of course all the option's in that are setup for DVD encode.

I have tried to use it already but it only encodes's the movie to the same as the original and thats using the resizing options in DVD2SVCD, but the quality i'm getting is excellent.

I have found a way to do what i want in TMPEGnc by putting the Aspect Ratio to 16,9 display in the Video Tab, the source Aspect Ratio to 4:3 625 Line (PAL, 704x576) and the video arrange method to no margin (keep aspect ratio) in the advanced Tab.

But i did not like the quality i got when i encoded the movie, i used the VCD calulator from this site but change the settings around for DVD.

I think the only way is to use a AVS.Script frameserved to CCE but i cannot get my head around this. I've tried reading the guides for it but by the time i was finished i was none the wiser

When you transcode from DVD to SVCD AND down convert the nice letterbox size to a full screen, you lost a LOT of detail of the pictures. You can't expect too much (unless you keep the same letterbox size).

Anyway, in TMPEGenc, use 2 pass and High Quality. The result is excellant. A lot of people can't even tell it is SVCD instead of DVD with such setting. Again, providing you don't convert the resolution much like converting from letterbox to full screen and vice versa.

Yes quality is great, although IMHO CCE is of higher quality and it is far faster, its not free though.
If you wish to author to DVD you must remember to encode to CVD resolution (352/480 NTSC 352/576 Pal) or full DVD resolution.
SVCD is not a valid DVD standard.

BTW, if you want to put SVCD or any non-DVD standard mpeg2 stuff into DVDs, use DVDPatcher to patch just the header of the file and import them into SpruceUp or Spruce's DVDMaestro. The program will crash after creating some index file. Then, change the header back to it's original stage and import them again and the Spruces would gladly take them as standard DVD files since the index files are already created.

If your DVD player will playback this type of hacked mpeg.
My Warfedale M5 unfortunatly does not.
For max compatability stick to standards.

Hi guys thx for the reply's.

I did try and use TMPEGnc using the 2pass VBR, but it will take at least 16 hours to encode on my AMD 1.33ghz.

Although TMPEGnc is free and has many options it's just way to slow for my liking.

Gonna try a few other things first, before i give TMPEGnc another go.

Will let you knw how it goe's
