The film I'm trying to author is OOP and (I think) public domain.

Anyway, AVStoDVD never begins the video encoding because AviSynth gets stalled.

    Any ideas?

  2. Hi avstodvd (what an inappropriate nickname...),

    1. Have you installed Haali Media Splitter?

    2. Have you installed ffdshow 32bit?

    3. If you have Windows 7, have you installed Windows 7 Preferred Filter Tweaker and selected ffdshow 32bit as default decoder?

Admittedly so, but please take as a compliment. Will register new account at your request.

    Yes.

    No.

I have since installed it though, to no avail. I receive the same error message.

I've included the log file of my authoring attempt after installing ffdshow.

Please note: the latest version that I am able to install of ffdshow is "rev3892_20110620" because of Windows 2000.

Can you play the mkv in windows media player?

You could also try some other video to dvd converter like the old dvd flick or video to video converter.

After checking Baldrick's suggestion, if it plays, do the following:

    1. Donwload GraphEdit

    2. Render the mkv with GraphEdit

    3. Post here the resulting graph image

The file plays just fine under VLC Media Player. My version of WMP is 6, so I never use it.

This is the only time AVStoDVD didn't work flawlessly for me. I would prefer sticking with it.

I tried another DVD authoring application before using AVStoDVD. A frustrating experience to say the least.

GraphEdit refused to run on my computer, as did Graph Studio. Probably another Windows 2000 issue.

Did you already try AVStoDVD with mkv file? Or this is the first time?

I guess this is a codecs issue, we have to find a way to decode AVC/AAC formats in your Win2k system.

It's not the first time. I have successfully authored to DVD at least half a dozen mkv files using AVStoDVD. No problems whatsoever, and that's without ffdshow installed.

Thanks for still supporting it (Win2K). Mine's an aging system but still very useful. It runs AVStoDVD well, encodes mp3 and flac files easily, has good video playback in VLC Media Player, and runs Office 2000 and Photoshop CS2 nicely.

Still, problems like this do arise from time to time because of the dated OS. I appreciate all of your help trying to get the file transfered to DVD.

Did those mkv contain AVC/H264 video and/or AAC audio? If yes, the issue could be not in the codecs but in the last problematic mkv file.

Not sure. I no longer have the mkv files. Unfortunately, I deleted them after I burned the DVDs in order to make room on my hard drive.

Since the movie is (supposedly) legal to share, I have downloaded another copy. It is also a mkv file albeit of inferior quality to the one I couldn't make work. It will probably suffice though, and authoring it should inform me of whether or not it's encoded as you have specified.

The second mkv I downloaded worked. AVStoDVD successfully authored it.
