  1. Well, after no replies to my question on DVD media and programs, I'm hoping that this section maybe a little more helpful. I orderd 100 Ritek and 50 EZDupe from RIMA last week. I decided the many positive posts about RIMA, RITEK and LEAD DATA was the way to go.

My next question concerns building a system dedicated to burning CD & DVD only. I've got a PIII 600 with 256RAM & a AMD 1.2G with 256RAM that I can setup for this purpose. My drives are a Pioneer DVD 303s, Plextor 12/10/32A and a Sony DRU500A. My HD would be a 18G Maxtor IDE, or two 9G IBM UltraStar's SCSI.

What would your recommendations be on this idea?

    Thank you.

I would say you would need bigger hard drives. Just my opinion, though.

  4. A full DVD-9 RIP can be 9GB. I would recommend no smaller than 60GB, with 120GB sounding 'about right.' Digital video takes up a huge amount of space. I have two 120GB and one 80GB HD in my main machine. But then I also edit/encode a lot of home movies.

HDs are rarely pretty cheap these days (http://www.pricewatch.com) so just pick how much you want to spend and then get the biggest you can afford

SCSI is not needed, just get an EIDE drive running at 7200rpm.
Either machine will work but for fastest rendering of MPG2 video files, the faster the processor the faster the rendering.

  6. Thanks for the adivce everyone; I appreciate it.

Question; is there any advantage to using an Intel cpu over AMD cpu for this type of project.

I recently got tired of using VIA chipsets due to their constanst updates and many reported USB and VIDEO issues. It just seems that there are less chipset issues with Intel cpu's.

I'll try for a drive between 60-100 gig and I can make it an all EIDE/IDE system. I was just concerned with constant /consistent throughput when recording/writing.
