  1. I have the RV32 and access to an RV31
    The RV32 says it can do SVCD, and does work with the VCD header trick.
    The RV31 cant do SVCD but it will work with the VCD header trick.

    I have tried just about every combination of to get SVCD to work,
    Today I found one that worked perfectly

    1. TMPGenc Mpeg tools

    MUX the .m2v and .mp2 as MPEG2 PROGRAM stream instead of MPEG2 SCVD stream.

    2. VCDEasy
    Create SVCD 1.0 and add your .mpg, it will tell you that it will autopad the file on the fly.
    Burn the CD

    3. RV32
    Put SVCD in player and enjoy

    I don't think that this is a perfect solution
    Because if I understand this right, the .mpg stream is padded
    when it muxed, and then padded again by VCDEasy
    which did increase the file size
    So it is possible that a rip might not fit in certain cases

    Next, I am going to see what I can do with bbmpeg
    to mux a mpeg2 stream and/or mpeg2 scvd stream
    hopefully that works, I'll post back what I find

  2. I was able to get BBMPEG to create a correctly muxed SVCD mpeg
    made from a KVCD3 mpeg2 template
    So now I don't have to worry about a huge file increase
    caused by muxing an mpeg2 stream and then padding it to svcd
    with vcdeasy

    I'd like to attach a pic of the settings, but ...
    So here are the settings I used that worked

    Tested settings #1 - Worked

    SVCD = Bulleted
    VBR = Bulleted
    Write Program EndCode Bulleted
    Computed Birate = Use Max
    TimeStamps = All Frames
    Pulldown = Auto
    Forced Mux Rate = 0
    Pack Options Size = 2324
    Pack Options Pack = 1
    Buffer Sizes Video = 46
    Buffer Sizes Audio1 = 4
    Buffer Sizes Audio2 = 4
    Startup Delays Pack = 0
    Startup Delays Video = 180
    Startup Delays Audio1 = 180
    Startup Delays Audio2 = 180

    Tested settings #2 - Worked

    SVCD = Bulleted
    VBR = Bulleted
    Write Program EndCode Bulleted
    Computed Birate = Use Max
    TimeStamps = All Frames
    Pulldown = Auto
    Forced Mux Rate = 0
    Pack Options Size = 2324
    Pack Options Pack = 1
    Buffer Sizes Video = 46
    Buffer Sizes Audio1 = 4
    Buffer Sizes Audio2 = 4
    Startup Delays Pack = 400
    Startup Delays Video = 344
    Startup Delays Audio1 = 344
    Startup Delays Audio2 = 344

    I'll play around some more and post back what I find out
    from my button pushing =)

  3. did some more thinking and experimenting

    KVCD3 MPEG2 is used for most of my encodes,
    and I remembered that one of the setttings in the TMPG templates
    was that the VBV buffer in TMPG was set to 40 which is for VCD.
    I have read that 40 is for VCD, 112 for SVCD, and 224 for DVD

    That got me thinking about the Buffer Sizes Video setting in BBMPEG,
    and that it is using 46 for VCD, 230 for SVCD, 46 for MPEG1 and 224 for MPEG2.

    I am making a wild guess that these settings must be very closely related.
    So I created a standard SVCD using TMPG included template with a VBV of 112
    Then I muxed the m2v and mp2 with BBMPEG changeing Buffer Sizes Video setting to 46
    and burned it with VCDEasy
    Well what do you know, it worked perfectly, phew!

    It looks like Panasonic's firmware cant handle a 112 buffer for SVCD
    but can handle a 40 VCD buffer just fine for SVCD when multiplexed

    I hope this helps anyone with a Panasonic RV32

    Friends of our borrowed my SVCD DVD conversions but it didn't work on their RV32. I'm sure that's their model. I don't think I'll bother changing my process just for them. Thankfully standard SVCD production works fine in my Philips.

    You don't have to change your process for them

    They could borrow your SVCD and make there own
    They would just have to extract the mpeg with VCDGear or IsoBuster,
    Demux the mpeg into .m2v and .mp2 , and Re-Mux back together
    Then they could use VCDEasy or Nero and burn there own SVCD

    Also, They could try the VCD Header trick

    Its all about options, no one has to do anything,
    but if they wanted/needed to get something done,
    its better to have options to do so, than to not have any.

    How is the header trick performed?

    Thanks

  7. You can perform the VCD header trick with TMPGenc Mpeg Tools or with BBMpeg
    With either programs you have your .m2v and .mp2, the .m2v being mpeg2,
    and you mux them as a mpeg1 non standard in tmpgenc,
    and as vcd with bbmpeg

    The RV32 thinks it is seeing a VCD and plays the SVCD file normally

    Perhaps I should do this from now on with my own disc even though my Philips plays SVCD's fine.
    Mainly for compatibiltiy with other peoples players as any future purchase of a standalone for myself will included a test with one of my SVCD discs before purchase.

    Thanks for the info.

  9. Hi Philbertron, looks like you're the expert for Panasonic DVD RV32. I'm trying to make SVCD for a friend who lives in the States (I'm in Singapore). My files are mpeg2. Must I make the SVCD using header trick or will the standard SVCD play without glitch?

    Look forward to your reply,
    Halley
    Software:
    Adobe Premiere Pro - capture stills & motion, edit, render
    Adobe Photoshop 7.0 - edit stills
    TMPGenc Plus 2.5 - encoding, splitting mpeg
    VCDEasy 1.1.5 - stills to mpeg, interactive menu, SVCD cue/bin
    MOTV 2.10
    Nero 5.5.8.2 - burn image

    I'm no expert, I just did lots and lots of reading, with a lot of trial and error

    You have 2 choices

    1.
    Create a SVCD that has its mpeg2 muxed according to my above post with bbmpeg

    2.
    Create a VCD with the Header Trick

    You could always create one of each, and send them both
