can you improve the audio on an .avi movie?

I was just wondering if there is a way to improve the audio on an .avi file.

If you mean to,
change Mono to Stereo? Equalize the audio? more bass?, more treble? special effects audio like reverberation? Clean up a noisy scene by removing unwanted sounds. ect., ect.

JasOn, you asked if audio in a .avi file could be improved?

Audio in pristene condition usually sounds the best (lowest signal to noise ratio). Performing other functions such as equalzation or vocal elimination often tint the remaining sound and make it sound unnatural. Less is best.
That being said,

Go to www.syntrillium.com and get the Cool Edit 2000 demo. It is a limited version that will allow you to use 2 of the filters/effects from start-up of the program. If you want to use other filters or effects just restart the program. Only problem is it won't load video files.
To do that,

You will want to get VirtualDub, linked from this site to extract the audio to a .wav file and the video to a .avi file preferably uncompressed. The file size will be large so keep the video to be altered short. Then alter the sound.

AviEdit is a free program that will let you combine your .avi and .wav to create a new avi file.
TMPGenc will do the same and create Mpeg 1 or 2 files of your choice.
For best rusults,
Sound Forge (full version) will allow you to open and alter the audio in an avi file and save it back out as an .avi file. You also will select the format of .avi as compressed, DivX (MPG4) or others.

This might be the best way if you don't have a good NLE (Non Linear Editor) as in Vegas, Premiere, Media Studio Pro or Avid Express on thePC.

I Hope this helps explain the process a little.

can't really go from mono to stereo, just can go from one channel mono to two channel mono, so the sound comes out of both speakers.
