Is it really neccesary to convert MPEG sound to AC3 (for DVD authoring) if your DVD player supports MPEG sound? I hear most DVD players support MPEG sound so I really don't want to go through the demuxing and muxing and sync issues if I don't have to

nope just make sure its 48000
If you start with PCM audio and have to convert to one or the other anyway, is it better to convert to AC3 than MP2? Is AC3 better or just more standard?
ac3 is supposed to be better -- but for 2ch stereo - i don't think there is a whole lot of diff. if same bit rate ...
