  1. My question is that TMPGEnc uses "3:2 pulldown on playback" while the Pulldown.exe app uses "2:3 pulldown on playback". Do these options produce the same results or does one repeat a field in the even frames while the other repeats a field in the odd frames? If a movie was encoded with TMPGEnc using the 3:2 pulldown on playback, is it ok to use pulldown.exe to switch all the flags to 2:3 pulldown on playback?

Also, I did see the post at http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=125455 on this topic but I'm still confused. What does the 2:3 pulldown in the pulldown.exe app actually do?

    Thanks

3:2 pulldown when playback is used when you have a FILM source movie (23.976fps) to leave it 23.976 but have your decoder play it back at 29.976fps (works great for ripping DVDs). When 3:2 pulldown is used it does this.. It takes four sequential video frames (A, B, C, D) from the FILM and are drawn on the video display as A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, D1, D2, where the 1 or 2 represents the field number within the frame.

    Hope That Helps!!! :P

I think both flags do the same thing. I don't know why TMPGenc calls it 3:2 pulldown, everything I read elsewhere speaks of 2:3 pulldown. Like puertorican said, the flag instructs your dvd player to repeat fields in a 2:3 pattern, so that the framerate is increased to 29.97fps during playback. The idea is encode at 23.976fps but still have it play back at 29.97fps, which is the required playback speed for NTSC. This saves you about %20 more bitrate because you now have %20 less frames to encode.

Is TMPGenc in fact duplicating different fields as compared to pulldown.exe? I doubt it, but even if so it doesn't really matter. The whole point of telecining is that you don't notice the extra fields, so when its actually played it might as well be the same, and in all liklihood probably is.

If you use one or the other than your fine. If you are worried about TMPGenc doing it incorrectly pulldown.exe can remove the flags and then add its own, but you will have to run it through twice. Or you could just turn off the 3:2 pulldown flag option in TMPGenc and use pulldown.exe instead.
