  1. Hi,

I have a vcd that will play using a vcd player with the cd in the drive, but I tried to copy it to the harddrive and after copying 80% it just stops and gives me a can't read error. Then I tried to use VCDGEAR to convert to mpg directly from cd to hd and that didn't work either. Any way to salvage this vcd by copying the DAT to harddrive by one way or another? Thanks.

  2. Leng,

In the past, the following couple of alternatives have worked for me.

    1) Try copying the dat file from your command prompt. At the command prompt, use the copy command with appropriate syntax.

    2) If you have a spare pc or secondary cd rom drive, try using one of those to copy the file over.

I have had VCD gear stall at 80% as well. After leaving it alone for another 5 to 10 minutes, I then end task on vcdgear and (sometimes!) the entire mpg has been copied. This of course is based on personal experience. I have not heard of others lucking out with this method. Hope this helps!

  3. The problem is that the cd has errors at that spot of the cd. Not a problem when playing the video as it just causes artifacts (sometimes not even noticeable) but when you try to copy it the computer is checking bit for bit and making sure they jive. if it doesn't it has to try again. It is getting to a hard part to read and taking many stabs at it. Try vcdgear and just let it go, usually given enough time it will finally read through those spots and speed back up the reading of the file.

    Well,

If that doesn't work. Get your hands on the old BlindWrite v2.x This version is file based instead of Image based. So you can just select the .DAT file and a place where to copy it and no matter what it WILL copy it. (Including all errors).

  5. Thanks Psycho Dad!

That BlindRead/Write program worked! They should put a link to that site here. God bless the internet, and to think that vcd was lost and unbackupable. This is cooler than BBSs on a 2400 baud! lol. Thanks again guys for the replies.
