    i have a choice narrowed down to the phillips dvd724, the samsung dvd p421, and the jvc xv-s500bk. i will be using this mostly for svcd's and wanted to know what u guys suggest. thanks

    I don't have those models, but I do have the Apex 1600 and it plays svcd + vcd + raw mpeg files and other. It's a great drive. I would recommend getting it.

    Why not just check the compatibility section listsing which DVD players play what?

    I was going to ask: "Does anyone care any more whether a standalone plays SVCDs?"
