Closed Captions: is it possible to rip them off a DVD ?

Is there any tutorial, which explains how to rip the CC encoded stream off the DVD and display it (with PoerDVD or WinDVD)?Or is this impossible (without HW decoder)?
FYI: I don't need to convert this stream to (S)VCD, I just want to make sure, that there are CC on the DVD (the covers says yes, but I can't see them).If other ways of showing CC, please advice.

errr...keep in mind closed captions are the regular subtitles that appear everywhere...

the occasional subtitles during foreign language dialogue may not be hardcoded into the video itself, but rather in a separate subtitle stream...but it's forced caption, not closed...

however, i'm still confused about what you mean.....do you want removable subtitles???? you can see which subtitles the original DVD has (w/ winDVD) by right clicking when the movie is playing and then choosing subtitles...

There is a set of tools called SCC_TOOLS that lets you grab the closed captions from a video stream and convert them into text. WWW.DOOM9.ORG has the tool set.

You should be able to turn on CC text using your TV's remote (NOT your DVD remote). PowerDVD has no problems displaying closed captioning (if they are encoded properly).

Thanx for the advice.The main problem is, I'm EU based- we have no NTSC TVs and no CC HW decoder.I'll try this tool and see, if the DVD has indeed a CC encoded Video stream.

Sorry, can't find SCC_TOOLS, but found CC_Parser.Maybe this could help.
The main reason why I'm doing this is: I want to find out, if my standalone player supports CC as advertised or not.As written above, I'm lacking a HW CC decoder, I just wahnt to know, if a certain DVD has CC or not.

With CC_PArser, you need the raw file output from the filter chain.I successfully built the filter chain, but can't find an appropiate file output filter.I indeed found one, but graphedit doesn't want me to connect the output from Pin Tee filter to the input of the file writer.Some advice anyone?
Update: found the DUMP filter for GraphEdit- this should do the job.(Thanx to the helpful doc of SCC_tools)

A player has very little to do to a CC'ed stream. In fact, it would have to actively filter the stream to remove the CC'ing. If you have PowerDVD on your computer, load up the DVD in your computer DVD-ROM and go to the movie. Pull up the configuration menu (RIGHT CLICK) and if closed captioning is present, the CLOSED CAPTIONS option will be available. Select the option, then select "ON". This is all you need to check to see if it has CC.

If I understand you coreectly, if I play this particular DVD with PowerDVD and the CC menu item is grayed, there is no CC info available?If so, it would eyplain something (the menuitem is grayed, there are no CC within the video - as seen with GraphEdit).YOu see, on the cover, the DVD says cleary:CC (closed captioning) is present.It looks like, I have to wait for a DVD with CC inside.Thanx anyway.
