DVD player doesn't load properly

I mail order purchased an AKAI DVPS-760 dvd player and it worked fine the day I got it. It sat for a week or so and now when inserting a dvd, it says loading for approximately 15 seconds and then freezes. I have to turn off and on the player then quickly press open/close to remove the disc. When using vcd's, "loading" will dissapear and four circles appear on the dvd player display and pushing any button on the player or remote will cause the tray to open.
