Variable bitrate problem

I have a Philips DVD 623.
After a week of experiments , making different VCDs and SVCDs I think it cannot play variable bitrate properly.
It stops every 5 seconds or so, for part of the second.
The same clips if encoded with CBR are OK.
Do you have the same player and is this problem common at all. I tryed to search for previous discussion on that topic, but found nothing.

Well, I think just any settings. I didn't make all the possible experiments, but it seems so. Does it sound strange. Maybe that particular machine is not OK.

For example the standart template for NTSC VCD, modifyed to have VBR. Or the template for SVCD. Damn player !

If your bitrate goes too high it will cause the DVD player to choke for a second every now and then. If you are converting from some AVI off the internet it's possible that the .avi file is not NTSC 29.97 framerate. Some DVD players cannot take video bitrate going below 500kbps.

That's why knowing the settings are important.

It was not too high. It was too low. 300kbps. Now tryed with 700kbps minimum and it works. Maybe the limit is really 500kbps. But this is not mentioned in the manual (which is like most manuals for idiots - push the start button to start and so on
