How to copy-protect your VCDs/SVCDs

The following tools will be required for this guide:

WinLock
CDRWin

You will need to create one un-protected VCD/SVCD before you can create a protected VCD/SVCD, so you may want to do this on a CD-RW or v.cheap CD-R.

1. First create the un-protected VCD/SVCD using your favourite method.

2. Then, enter CDRWin and create a .cue file from the un-protected VCD/SVCD you just burnt.



3. Open up WinLock and hit "Create File".

4. Then hit "Cuesheet", and locate the Cuesheet you created earlier.

5. Keep WinLock open, and re-open CDRWin.

6. Once the CD has started Recording, click the "Modify button, this alters the dummy file and this is the key to the copy protection.

7. CDRWin will tell you that the Burning process has failed, but this fine because all the important data has been burnt already.

There have been lots of people in the past asking about copy-protecting discs.

You can use this if you:

1. Have friends that like to "borrow" VCDs/SVCDs from your collection and copy them at home. Make sure they ask first.

2. If you sell VCDs/SVCDs to others, this prevents them from copying your VCDs/SVCDs and selling them on after doing no work.

3. Its useful to know if a time ever came to know it, and I am happy to contribute whatever knowledge I have to VCDHelp.com

When people are putting copy protection on video, it's for profiteering purposes. That way, the only way to get the video is by buying it from him.

Not everyone knows about the software to copy copy-protected CD's and while you can't stop everyone from copying your discs you can stop most. Most people still don't know about VCD's yet. DivX is what they think of when you mention VCD. And besides, most people aren't giong to go through "all the trouble" of trying to copy a copy-protected disc. People are lazy when it comes to using their brains...

Just wondering... If this method works the way I think it does then when copied with clone cd (which everybody I know who copies stuff has) it will work as clone cd wont mid a damaged file.

This is exactly what I've been looking for! However, I just tried it twice and neither my computer or my DVD player will recognize it as a VCD. My DVD player actually sees it as a cd, and it doesn't work...I try to open it with power DVD on my comp and it tells me its an unrecognized format. Am I doing something wrong? Anyone else got this to work?

erh, how do you then do a copy yourself ? unless you have two copies of everything, one unprotected!!! Just a thought.

Well I tested it and it worked!!!!!! I was amazed its the first time I have ever found a copy system that wasn't very 1-2-3 to copy. Of course there is a way to copy the cd, just don't expect me to tell!!

Oh yea,
I will be using it for some pc games to stop friends from copying them but because of the way this works I doubt it will work on a (s)vcd. Somebody better test.

This copy protection does not work with duplicators
So IF you have a duplicator it will still copy a protected CD -

Have been going through the replies section and found a few people with compatibility issues.

The method works for me and some more people have found it to work, so its down to your DVD player.

Anyway I will be posting more methods soon so everyone can try a different method and find one that works for them...

maybe you should give credit where credit is due. to me! and you should also udpate your guide to include the padded video file.. because really how hard would it be to copy the .dat or .mpg file off the disc and then just create the vcd from there without the copy protection? not hard at all.. with the oversized video file that is not possible. the only way possible to copy it is to run the dat file through vcdgear or run the mpg file thru tmpgenc..

I find this is VERY STUPID to protect (S)VCD, or Audio CD. Really Stupid and egoistic.

Beccause, usually, if you have a VCD, it's beccause YOU HAVE RIPPED a dvd, or transformed a DIVX !!!!! Or Beccause you made a COPY of an Audio cd, that you didn't buy anyway !

I mean.. YOU have STOLEN the original ! Or you copied the cd of someone who LET YOU copy it !

And then, u want to protect what you have stolen, or copy!! So that other people cannot do like you ? So that people cannot copy the CD like YOU DID?!?!

before you wrote your nonsense reply have you ever thought of people owning their own original dvd's and have friends who want a copy but because they are yet to have a dvd player wants a vcd copy instead? and so what if i make sure they dont get to copy what i ripped.. am i not protecting the original copy of dvd by doing this?

This post is so stupid. There are much BETTER ways to protect CDs, as well as ensuring they still work on stand alone VCD Players. Such methods work better (than this silly VB6 app), because they alter the the file structure so Windows will ether spit the disk out, or fail to rip the track.
