Ok, I want to know where to put HDD and what cdr/dvd rom on what IDE channel.
Right now I have.
c: is 15gig as master on IDE1
d: is 17gig as master on IDE controller card
e: is 40gig as slave on IDE1
n: is cdr as master on IDE2
m: is DVDRom as slave on IDE2
I used to get around a 6x speed when ripping DVDs to HDD e: . I reinstalled XP the other day and now I get 1.2 at tops. I havnt changed anything and made sure dma was enabled but was wondering how everyone else would config there HDD/roms for better performance.
Hope my explanation is ok and understandable.
Thanx!!!

Didnt think it was that hard of a question?!?!?!
did you remember to install an Advancaed Scsi Programming Interface (ASPI) layer/
ASPI layers do not exist in Windows XP, it emulates them, greatly reducing rip speeds.
Adaptec has a free aspi layer for Windows XP on their site.
Sorry, I didnt meantion that. Yes I have the current ASPI layer installed. I cant figure out why after I did a clean install of XP my rip speeds went to crap?
Thanx, any more info would be cool.
Try swapping the cdr and the dvd-rom. I had the same thing happen and the dvd said is was DMA mode, but was not until I made it the master (go figure).
I would also recommend getting rid of some of that IDE crap. 5 IDE devices is just too much for one human to own.
LoL, NO WAY......I can still put 3 more IDE devices on the IDE card.
Thanx for the input, ill give it a try!!
If you put the DVD on a different controller than the CD burner you'll be able to copy CDs directly, no writing to hard drive then to CD-R. It doesn't really answer you question but I have found this info useful. I had my drive on the same controller but the first time I used Nero to do a direct CD copy it told me I was a llamer and had to change my hardware around. Now when I copy a CD I read once, write once instead of read CD, write to HD, read HD, write to CD-R.
The way IDE works is, the Slave device always has to go "through" the Master. If you have an IDE card, along with the on-board, then you have four Master posistions available. Put your four most important drives as Masters, then start with the least used Master, and put a Slave device there. This will balance the system as much as you can.
Even if you have to buy more/new cables, (get rounded ATA100) it is worth it. If you want to go from CD-R to DVD, then make sure they are not on the same channel as mentioned before.
Well put, Jeepman.
Take it easy. And if its easy take it twice.
Thanx for the input. Ill try to set the dvd rom as master to start w/.
Thanx
