Beginner questions on AVI file format for MPEG2 conversion

I have two cards I could use to capture. They are in different computers. One is a DC-10+ and the other is a PCTV card. Using Virtualdub with the DC10 card I seem to only have the mjpeg 24 bit choice. Other choices for data format give me an error when they are choosen. Capturing with the mjpeg 24bit data format only works in Studio 7 to convert to mpeg2 and Studio 7 doesn't say if it's constant bit rate or variable. The LSX encoder won't use the AVI file.

1. Is there a way to use a different data format with the DC10+ card?

2. What AVI data format should I use so I can encode with other mpeg2 encoders?

Some of the capture codec's are specific for capture cards and may not work with other cards.

Install the Nimo codec pack, this may give you more to select.
