I'm considering the following set-up:
Having a long s-video lead from my living room to my spare room (under the floor boards) - connecting my a/v amp to a hollywood dv bridge then into my mac.
The lead would be about 15-20 feet. Would this cause any degrigation in the picture?
I plan to capture TV programs in iMovie and burn to VCD with Toast.

As long as it is a good cable, something like these:

There shouldn't be any noticeable degradation over just 20 feet.As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."
As long as you stay below 5m (16feet), you should not have any problems. But maybe you need some shielding at one side of the cable.
if you use seperate cables like belden 8281 or rg6 or canare cable for each of the y and c componets , you can run s-video 100' or more without a video amp in line.
each side must be the same lenth , basicly to do this you get a s-video male to bnc x 2 adaptor at both ends ..
video cable is always shielded
I meant that extra shielding (I don't know the exact name): it's some ferrit mantle around the cable.Originally Posted by BJ_M
One more option....
If you need to run longer than 16FT I would recommend converting the S-Video cable to BNC or coaxial cable which can be run over much longer distances.
Here is one from Smarthome: http://www.smarthome.com/7817.html
Radeo Shack may also have it...
