A buffer is a temporary storage space used to store the data just before its written to the CD, if the buffer empties the disk will be scrap.

(Could be memory or hard drive storage space)

Most modern writers have "Burn Proof" which protects the disk from being scrapped by turning off the laser, and switching it back on when the buffer is full again.

Buffer under runs don't happen with writers with Burn Proof technology, so you cannot scrap a disk this way, well almost

If your hard drive is slow, your buffer might empty. Make sure you defrag your hard drive before making a CD, do not run other programs in the background.

According to Nero's supported drive page, your TDK40x/12x/48x recorder has been supported since 5.5.8.0. Time to upgrade.
