Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but I was just reading around the site a bit and someone said that you can't copy a dvd directly from your dvd rom to a dvd burner. Is that true? You still have to go through the process of ripping it, etc? What would be the point in spending all that money on a dvd burner if it doesn't do that?

    The real answer is.....I didn't!

    I don't own a dvd burner. I was just asking a question.

...and you are allowed to make one back up copy of any dvd you own, by law.

from a technical standpoint, most dvds are dual layer, meaning they hold 9 gigs of data; whereas dvd-r, only holds 4.7 gig (only one layer). Therefore you will have to recompress the dvd in order to fit it.

  5. The real answer is YES you can, that is if the original DVD is NOT copy protected, Nero 5.5.8.2 will allow for DVD copy. You can check the copy protection with Smartripper.

    Says who ?
Perfectly legal to make 1 backup copy for your own use, and put the original away for safe keeping.

AND, who said it was not possable to do a DVD to DVD copy ?

    John,

I had been looking through other posts earlier....

Although not all those replies were there when I looked at it. I just didn't understand why someone would make such a big purchase to do something that a regular dvd rom and cd burner can do. If you still have to go through all the steps of ripping it, encoding it and then burning it, why have such an expensive drive? Or is it that you can burn your movie onto a dvd-r and just avoid having one movie on two disks? Even then it's kind of pointless to go out and get a dvd burner. No shame in having a movie on two disks.

  9. Buy a Home DVD recorder, like my Panasonic DMR E-20 for $699, I can copy or backup anything I throw at it and it looks just like the original source in the 2 hour mode and damn good in the 4 hour mode, and no capturing, ripping or any of that time consuming stuff, man Hi8mm and MPEG2 stuff looks great on the 2hr mode and the one hour (9000 bitrate) is astounding! Hey record 4 shows of start trek with commericals or 5 shows without, maybe even squeeze 6 shows in the 4 hr mode.
Plus when using the ram disks its just like having a TIVO, you can watch one prgram on the disc while recording another on that same disc at the same time and toggle back and forth between the 2. Can't do that on any DVD+RW or DVD-RW. Every DVD-R I have made has played in any DVD player also.

  10. You can't do without the ripping process, as this is necessary to get rid of the DVD's copy protection. However, you do *not* have to re-encode the ripped vobs (as long as they're under 4.7GB anyway), so the most time-consuming part is gone.

Really ? Does your DVD Recorder have a built-in HD that copies the content of the movie first and then dumps it back on a blank DVD-R ?

What about copying dual-layer DVD disc ?

  12. IF LIFE ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE..........
buying that damn panasonic RAM recorder definitely isnt
the answer either..........you can rent a dvd,rip it in less
than 10 mins, ifoedit the vts sectors, and burn it all in less
than 2 hours if u dump extras like commentaries and stuff..
    dvd-r down to a buck now,RAM's well over 10$........
do what u want, one can always say what they want...

Yes, I have also posted replies to the extent that you cannot do a simple disk to disk with DVD disks, but that was yesterday today or tomorrow is different.

All these people with DVD burners are big "Show offs" so take no notice of these posers, yes its true you can put the same movie on to CD-R's and can even have some menus. But huh making a DVD from a DVD rip would be cool, you get the whole movie on one disk, and get a high quality.

I do have a lot of high quality VCD's which are as good as DVD's The bottom line is this, if you have nothing else to spend your money on go out and buy a DVD writer, I'm sure we will all have them eventually, Ill probably buy a PlexWriter but until then, VCD's are the most popular way to go.
