    is it better to use software which converts straight to mpeg
    i have just about an aver tv card, and the software i got with it
    allows me to convert staight to mpeg 1&2, is this the best way to
    covert, or is it better to use tmpge and virtual dub to convert,
    any helpon this would be great as im new to all this.

    Hi,

    Chances are that TMPGE will give better quality encoding than any (non-Hollywood priced) real-time encoder could ever give.

    Also, if you're going to do any editing or filtering then capturing at the least possible compression will minimize quality loss due to re-encoding.
