Why buy anything but a Pioneer?

Seriously... why tempt fate? The Pioneer players look great, and play everything you throw at it. Is there a reason to recommend another brand?

Pioneers can be a little hard to find. I went out to buy a DVD player for my brother and ended up getting an Apex because the Pioneers were either not available or > $200. The Apex works fine although I have a Pioneer.

I also have a PIONEER (DV-434) and absolutly love it but I must tell you that some apex players can play higher bit rates,just look in the dvd compatibility chart.. I basically said the same thing as you in another thread and look what the guy a few post taught me

Also here is some intresting reading for you APEX IS NOW GOING TO BE MAKING PIONEER PRODUCTS as well as SONY and a few others. Now maybe will stop seeing post like... my SONY won't play the vcd I made...

Yes, but Apex video quality isn't as good. Also, Pioneer has the best 4:3 downconversion of any player on the market. Since most people still have regular 4:3 TV's, this is important.

Also, the Pioneer's play PAL just fine on my NTSC television. Spiderman hack works great!

it gives more quality for same money or less. and dont have the same cheep feel that some of the pioneers have.

I am not trying to start an argument but how can you say the quality isn't as good, if the apex players can play higher bitrates.I own a PIONEER DV-434 and have recently bought a APEX AD-3201.

The higher bitrate you use to create a vcd or svcd the quality will be better.

Therefore the apex1500 around $100 that the person pointed out to me in that post should play better than my $400 pioneer dv-434.

So is it safe to say seeing as Apex is going to start making Pioneer's products that you'll never buy PIONEER again?

Um...

That press release regarding APEX does NOT say that APEX will make Pioneer players.

What it says is that APEX is now officially licensed by Philips/Pioneer/Sony to manufacture DVD hardware and firmware.

Philips, Pioneer, and Sony are the license holders for DVD as they hold the relevant patents. The press release merely states that APEX will now be paying royalties to P/P/S for the use of DVD patents in the manufacture of DVD players.

You guys are smoking crack if you really think APEX is going to build DVD players to be sold under the Philips/Pioneer/Sony names! It's totally B.S.

AND... bitrate does not equal quality in the set-top player world. I know that on your computer, if you increase the bitrate you see more quality, but even a much higher bitrate can look worse if the set top player has crappy firmware and hardware. Example: PS2 -- watch some DVDs on a PS2 and then watch them on a real DVD player. The difference is night and day. EVERY component of the player makes a difference. If the bitrate difference is major, then yes, the better DVD player may show more compression artifacts, but when it comes to clarity, detail, and color accuracy the bitrate is not the only factor.

The decoder makes a BIG difference.

HAving said that I must point out that APEX's website is misleading.

This is how it reads:

Apex Digital First Manufacturer To Sign License Agreement with Sony, Pioneer and Philips for American brand Apex Digital.

I really didn't pay attention to the second line

However A true "licensing agreement" is when one company makes a product for another company, and happens more often than you think.
