  1. why I can see partially downloaded files in mpeg format, while avi files need to be downloaded completely?

  2. I believe it's because some info might be stored within the file that gives its configuration to the player.... Don't know for sure but if you re-index the avi file using divxfix you will be able to see it. This just tells me that there must be some config info at the start that tells it how many indexes or frames to expect. By reindexing it you will be able to play the file....

    Look in the tool section here for the link to get divxfix.

    Yes, it is due to Mpeg having headers so you can play a partial. For avi's, assuming you have the codecs installed, just open it in Virtual Dub and it will re-index the missing parts, and you can easily scan through it.
