I'm using WinAVI v11 I was previously using an earlier version and I've noticed that quite frequently with this new version there's no sound on my conversions.
    I'm always converting to avi.

I'm pretty sure it's a matter of not having the proper codecs with this new version. Does anyone have any idea how I can find out what codecs I need. and where I can get them. I think a lot of the time the file I'm converting when this happens is mkv but there might have been some mp4s in there as well I wasn't really paying attention when it started because I didn't realize it was now a thing since it never was with the last version I used.

No clue without a MediaInfo analysis of both source and result of your conversions...

I'll post it when I run into another one that doesn't encode properly.
    Thanks for the suggestion.

Apparently there was no audio encoded at all. I have no idea why it's the exact same settings I use for all my other conversions (except for file size and dimensions of course) and they work perfectly 98% of the time.

I did use AAC. I also tried mp3, ATSC, mp2, and PCM whatever that is. All produced no sound.

Hope you get to see this.

    Cheers

Just a small piece in addition: The target audio format doesn't matter much if the converter of your choice is unable to handle the source audio format. Seems to be the case here. The more elaborate the GUI, the less I trust the features. There is probably more powerful real freeware.

    Thanks for responding LigH.de

WinAVI isn't freeware but I guess I'll have to find an alternative. MediaInfo says the source audio format is AAC which WinAVI does have support for. What is it specifically that is non-standard so that WinAvi's support does not include this file. Do you see something in the source info that tells you what exactly is not supported?

Any suggestions on an better alternate

    Thanks
