running time ? total capacity ? around 4.3 gigabytes

running length will depend on format and quality

720*480 max frame size 29.976 fps DVD std about 120 minutes

you can go more IF you set a lower video encoding bitrate which means lower quality

Max is around 7 hours for 4.3gb considering low bitrate for source scale of 352x240 / 352x288

  4. 120 minutes on a 4.7 gb disc and 4 hours on a double layer disc. alex is incorrect as a blank dvd can hold 120 minutes for a 4.7gb disc. do your research dude.

  5. depend from decoder but some decoders may have issues with extremely low bitrate video - silicone vendors specifying minimal bitrate for video - i would say that for MPEG-2 somewhere around 500 - 1000kbps can be minimal accepted bitrate (for example VCD bitrate should be safe - anything lower may be not supported by decoder even if valid from H.262 perspective) - translating this to real life figures - somewhere around 6 - 8 hours should be possible.

Through judicious use of pre processing, I've put ~12 hours on a DL disc (mainly for demonstration purposes), so I know it can be done. I seriously don't recommend it - you have to make do with small image size (yes, letterboxing is one of the tricks), blockiness, posterization, smearing AND jerky low framerates.

Anyone who is putting a fixed quantity figure answer (instead of a general rule of thumb) to this question doesn't really know DVD encoding.

There is no rule of thumb if for example Intel support anything from 62.5kbps and for example STM anything from 250kbps - rule of thumb is probably common lowest commercial denominator i.e. VCD.
