  1. I used MakeMKV to rip a DVD. The MKV file plays properly in my media players. I open up AVStoDVD put my MKV file in a the source. HCenc shows up. Then HCenc samples to about 50% or so and just sits there. I do not get a log file as I stop the program after several hours. Let me know if there is more information required.

I did set the output "ISO UDF Image". In the preferences under the video tab I did deselect "Keep MPEG2 DVD Compliant Video". I also changed the output location and the DVD Label.

    Thanks,
    Vathraq

  2. I also tried it with the "Keep MPEG2 DVD Compliant Video" selected. This seems to start ffmpeg instead of HCenc. This results in an .iso too large to fit on an DVD-5. That's the reason I deselected "Keep MPEG2 DVD Compliant Video". So it seems to me this is something to do with HCenc.

Firstly, the mkv would not fit on to a single-layer dvd (DVD-5)
Secondly, the henc report suggests that it will not encode to fit on a DVD-5

I think 'compliant' for makemkv means no re-encoding of the dvd in the rip so it would have to be e-encoded for a DVD-5 whatever.

'Non-complaint' would still have to be re-encoded for dvd since avstodvd has to encode unless the source is compliant and will fit.

Check your output settings on avstodvd. That you have DVD-5 selected. Also do you need all those sub-title and audio tracks ?

  4. I do have DVD-5 selected. Those sub-title and audio tracks are all available in the MKV. When I drag the MKV into AVStoDVD it asks me which tracks I want to include. I only include the english sub-title and audio tracks. So, there are 2 audio and 2 sub-title tracks de-selected.

  5. Here is the log file from AVStoDVD with the "Keep MPEG2 DVD Compliant Video" selected. It did use ffmpeg and the reulting .iso was too big.

    Thanks,

You will have received an 'over-size' warning.

The video setting in avstodvd 'keep compliant video' does not re-encode regardless of the DVD size selected hence the warning. And the log confirms that no re-encoding took place.

Un-tick the compliant-video setting. Re-start the program and reload the mkv. The program should then index the mpeg (inside the mkv) and the size should then be reported at 4450/4450.

Test just done on a larger than 4 gig mpeg2 source.

  7. This brings me back to my OP. If I deselect/untick "Keep MPEG2 DVD Compliant Video" the oversize wsrning is gone. AVStoDVD then starts HCenc. HCenc stalls about 50% through the sampling phase of the encoding.

    Thanks,
    Vathraq

I thought you were talking then about makemkv ??

But you can always select a different encoder. You are not obliged to use HCenc. But I doubt if that is the issue.

I always recommend a two pass encode with HC in AVStoDVD. Are you using a one pass encode?

I've never seen HCenc stall in the middle of a first pass encode., but anything can happen.
Try changing the "priority" (top right in the HCenc window) from idle to low.

Open the task manager and keep and eye on CPU usage.

  11. To be clear on the encode. You all can correct me here, but I am not trying to force it to use any particular encoder. My thought is that AVStoDVD is set to auto select the encoder. I tried selecting ffmpeg in the preferences under video, but HCenc still started with "Keep MPEG2 DVD Compliant Video" unticked.

    Thanks,
    Richard

Don't mess with the preferences. Instead, load the project, then edit title, video tab, deselect "auto video setup" and choose the encoder.

  13. So, I went with the recommendations. Opened up AVStoDVD. Insured DVD size was set at DVD-5. I set the output to ISO UDF Image. Unticked Keep MPEG2 DVD Compliant Video. Changed the output folder and DVD Label. Imported my MKV. Selected only the english subtitles and audio track. I then edited the title and unticked the auto video setup and chose HCenc VBR 2-pass. I clicked start and voila it did not stall and the ISO created correctly.

Not sure why it would stall using the auto setup and HCenc VBR 1-pass being chosen, but forcing HCenc VBR 2-pass works is beyond me.

Have not tried forcing HCenc VBR 1-pass yet.

    Thanks,
    Vathraq

  14. Just replicated my actions in my last post. This time I selected HCenc VBR 1-pass. I did stall at only 8%. So, it is something to do with this MKV file and HCenc VBR 1-pass mode. HCenc VBR 2-pass and ffmpeg both work.

    Thanks,
    Vathraq

I still use my Nero for these... but found the free open source "DVDStyler" to be easier to created menus than NERO. Works very well and is extremely easy to create new menus, Templete need a bit of play to find proper directory to store them... overall, this has replaced Nero for creation of DVD menus for me.

SOMETIMES IT IS BEST TO DUMP those Pro-Software programs when they require help from Forums to work.

You are bang out of order. As a new member you should aquaint yourself with the rules especially the one about hijacking topics. And the one about cross-posting.

Avstodvd is NOT, I repeat, NOT Pro-Software. In fact it is the most well supported free program in these forums. And by the author himself.
