I'm a newbie (duh) and am trying to back up some DVDs because we play them in the car, and the kids beat the originals up pretty bad. Anyway-- trying to burn this using DVD Flick (and imgburn) yesterday and kept getting this error. In fact, I don't even know where to look to find the "error code".

If someone can help it would be greatly appreciated!

    Code:

  2. DVDflick is not used to back up (duplicate) an existing DVD: it is only used to create a new original DVD from various video files (mp4s, AVIs, mkvs, etc).

IMGburn can (by itself) be used to duplicate an existing DVD, as long as that DVD is not a commercial copy-protected Hollywood disc.

If you clarify which task you're trying to accomplish, people can give you better advice: are you having problems getting DVDflick to create a DVD from your video files, or are you having problems backing up (copying) an existing DVD? If the issue is copying, is this a disc you previously created yourself or is it a commercial DVD? (Neither program is of any use with commercial DVDs.)

Thanks for taking the time to reply. See--I didn't even know how to ask the question.

I am taking MKV files from my hard drive and using DVD Flick to create the DVD.

I'm not familiar with DVDFlick anymore, but the only error I could see was "incorrect value for r: 0" . (Edit Bjs has identified the culprit, and my guess was not right)

I would suggest using AVStoDVD instead, to make your DVD. Since you have several MKV files to import, you should make a menu in AVStoDVD so that you can select each title. Here is a guide to the program that might help.

The first video has no FPS so it throws the error "r".

Fix stream fps issue and all should be well.

    Thanks.

The MKV file plays on my PC--so I would have assumed everything was okay with the file. Do I need to re-rip to create a new MKV with a correct FPS setting? Or is there some other way to make a change to the file I already have.

  7. How did you get the MKV's in the first place? Normally you could use AnyDVD or DVDfab to "rip" a original DVD, eg make a copy without copy or regional protection and burn that.

I would try remuxing it in Mkvmerge GUI, which is part of mkvtoolnix. Just import the MKV file and click Start Muxing. See if the resulting MKV file will work.

I used Acrok to create the MKV file. I used their default settings for the most part.

Tried again last night... re-ripped the MKV of the file that gave the error with a Fixed FPS vs. a Variable FPS (which was the standard setting).

Went through the whole authoring process, it seems, but I woke to an error that the G: drive (DVD) could not be detected. Ugh. Not sure what the deal is now. Had just burned a music CD earlier in the day so I know it works.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help. I may try one of the other suggested programs today.

  11. cincylaw, now that you've clarified what you were trying to do, I'm still a little mystified by why you seem to be doing things "the hard way."

You say you want to make backup copies of some dvds for use by your kids in your car, to avoid them damaging the original discs. That makes sense, and a lot of people do the same. However, most people would simply use cloning software to make an exact copy of the original dvd, from the original dvd. Instead of taking that simple direct route, you seem to be ripping/re-encoding the original DVD episodes into MKV files and then using DVDflick to re-create the dvd from scratch? Why would you do that if you still have the original discs and can simply duplicate them?

DVDflick (and for that matter AVStoDVD) has issues converting some types of weird video files into a standard dvd. The most typical hiccup results in an MKV file of 30 mins being converted to a DVD with a playing time of two seconds, or DVDflick claiming the file has no video track or the video track is corrupt. I've also had this happen with some AVIs and MP4s downloaded from websites, but mostly with MKV files.

Figuring out whats "wrong" with your source MKV files that makes them incompatible with DVDflick could be very time consuming (PC software players have no trouble playing all manner of non-standard or defective video files that will completely choke any conversion utility). If you do still have the original DVDs, it would be much easier to clone them directly using a program like DVDfab.
