  1. Hi there!

As many of you may be aware, YouTube started experimenting streaming of 60 fps 4K videos, as TechCrunch reported last week: http://techcrunch.com/2015/03/26/youtube-is-experimenting-with-ultra-high-def-ultra-sm...-the-examples/

Unfortunately, none of the websites that wrote about the news digged is really techy. We don't know which codec is used, what's the bitrate, etc.

I can't get to download the file so I'm not able to analyse it with MediaInfo or something similar, is anyone able to do it?

  2. You can download them using for example a Firefox addon - Complete YouTube Saver:
    http://www.cys-audiovideodownloader.com/
    or
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/complete-youtube-saver/

First you need to go to 'Options' to download/install ffmpeg and tick all formats/containers/qualities you want to choose from.

I discovered this tool after browsing the forum randomly, I'm sorry.

It works great, so thank you.

This tool looks very cool too, I like the CLI. I'm going to install it on my VPS. Thank you too.

    Here is a 4K/60P clip.

For 4K it gives me a VP9 bitrate of 20Mbps (but sometimes chokes due to lack of bandwidth), QHD works great and consistently and has a VP9 bitrate of about 15Mbs.

  6. Even my Retina MacBook Pro is struggling to play YouTube's 4K60. Iris Pro isn't so great after all, I guess.

  7. The problem is that 4K 60p is only VP9 at the moment. And that this video codec isn't hardware decoded by any CPU/GPU to my knowledge. Your latest generation MacBook will play 4K 60p videos fine when they'll be streamed in AVC (H.264) or HEVC.

  8. Thanks.

I've exported 4K60 from Premiere Pro just for the fun of it in H.264 and my Mac plays it just fine, so you're right about VP9.
