Need a device that does this........

Morning,

I have two laptops that i want to connect/share one logitech 5.1 speaker system. I would need an adpater of some sort to first send the signal to one place from both laptops, then for the signal to projected over the 5.1 speaker system.

I thought about this (http://www.ebay.com/itm/311095627958?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT) but it looks like it may dot do the trick for both.

Any advice?

That thing definitely wouldn't work for your purpose. You could use a WDTV media player (or any media player that support streaming from a computer) at the speaker end with an HDMI to optical/analog audio converter in-between. If your speakers have an optical input you will get 5.1 sound, if they only have RCA inputs you will only get stereo sound unless the speakers have an audio processor that has some kind of simulated surround sound option.

Selur....both my laptops have the basic headphone and mic connection. 1 of them, the Pavilion dv7 has "beats" audio

I don't need the wdtv media player as i don't want to stream and secondly my speakers don't have an hdmi output

Does your logitech 5.1 speaker system also have 'the basic headphone and mic connection' as input?
If it does a normal 'Headset Splitter'-cable should do the job.

I have these (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3304945), the main console has the headphone jack, but the item you showed me is for both headphone and mic (one each). Is there a splitter which can handle two sound connectors? And remember, the speakers shown need to be plugged into something for sound as well........

The idea would be to

• connect the outputs of the two laptops to the cable I linked to, this way the two signals get joined
• split the output of the cable I linked before to in a way that it connects to your sound system (http://www.amazon.com/3-5mm-Stereo-Female-Y-Cable-6-Inch/dp/B000I23TTE)

I assume you already have 3.5mm to 3.5mm extension cables (http://www.amazon.com/Mediabridge-3-5mm-Stereo-Audio-Cable/dp/B004LTEUDO) which are needed to connect the laptops to the cable I first linked to.

I see, the way you worded your post it sounded like you were looking for a remote speaker connection to 2 laptops. Even if your G51's don't have an HDMI input the DV7 has an HDMI output and the only way you're gonna get surround sound out of it is with an HDMI converter like the one I linked to.

I don't think you can run the system as "surround sound" from either laptop. The speaker system only has analogue inputs for 5.1ch audio and the laptops probably only have an analogue stereo out (headphone or line output).

There seems to be no reason why you can't connect the laptops at the same time and run them through the front left and right speakers as a stereo system though. Connecting the headphone output of one laptop to the "Front" PC input with a cable such as this would do it. For true 5.1 sound the easiest/cheapest way is to get an USB A/B switch and an external USB audio device.

That will not let you mix audio from both computers, just switch between them.
