  1. Hi,

I've been manually cutting film and looking for editing software.

    Feature 1:

    I have 50, segments i.e. video time= 3:50 min segment length 10 seconds video time2= 4:33 min, length 30 seconds.

Is there editing software that could do that for me? I insert data off spreadsheet, and it cuts the film for me?

    Feature 2:

I'd like a feature in software that could give me a screenshot of the frame, at specified Video Times.

    Thanks in advance

  2. Most any video editor will do number 2. Even Windows Movie Maker should do that. Number 1 is a bit harder but maybe a script for Vegas can do it.

That's what an EDL is. Just import an edl into any decent pro or semi-pro NLE and it will "conform" your edit to its list.

You will just need to know how to format the edl correctly. You can do that by creating a sample edit and export the edl and use it as a guide.
Then you export your excel sheet in that format as a text file. Hardest part is matching up the clip references.

  4. I've always wondered how people come across finding those times in the first place? Don't you manually have to seek to see where you're going to cut, manually have to find out the times of the in/out points and possibly manually calculate the duration , then manually write it down in a spreadsheet ?

For me it's much easier and faster to do it as you see it - mark in /mark out , send it to a batch queue . Using something like videoredo or solveigmm video splitter that does smart rendering and can handle many types of formats . Most "editors" as in NLE's will re-encode everything except for a few formats

Sounds to me like he's trying to remove someone else's intro logo on the the videos he downloaded. ffmpeg can do it via copy, but it will make the cuts at nearest key-frame. This has already been discussed numerous times. https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/365637-Batch-trim-using-FFMPEG

    No.

Edl is the term I'm looking for . thx. Hopefully I can get this to work. Manually editing will take a lot of time.

Why does manually editing take so much time? Unless your computer can't handle the load, then you may want to try proxy editing.

Please post back with a sample of your final edl.

  10. Did you have the list ahead of time? e.g. did someone give you an EDL or instructions ? Because "manually" editing and queue is actually faster if you're doing this from scratch. You eliminate the time of having to do tedious data entry

Are your entries supposed to be kept , or cut ? ie. include or exclude ? Are they separate individual clips or appended into 1 film ? Straight cuts, no transitions ?

What format are the videos ? Do you understand the point raised about "smart editing" vs. Re-encoding ? Because stream copying is much faster than re-encoding. Not to mention the quality loss incurred with re-encoding

  11. I completely agree manually would be quicker -- but maybe I'm misunderstanding something and that's why I'd like to see the EDL.

Aside from using multiple and/or incompatible editors on the same video, I can't see any need for EDL. Vegas allows for export / import of both EDL and XML. Here is a simple EDL I exported for reference. Vegas will import it if it has a .txt extension. Then it's a matter of specifying location of video files.
    Code:
    TITLE: undefined
    FCM: NON-DROP 24 FRAME
    001 UNKNOWN V C 00:00:00:00 00:00:02:07 00:00:00:00 00:00:02:07

It could be a workflow thing. For example, edit being overseen and decided by a committee of specific content experts (who may not be local to editor or able to work with editor schedule).

Editor makes window burn copies of all source material. Each member gets full set of window dubs. They go through material and mark in & out points of relevant choice takes and add, on their schedule, their contribution to a shared Google docs spreadsheet. When ready, editor imports SS as edl, then adjusts for good video flow. IOW, client/content specialists do what they do best (picking relevant content) and editor does what they do best (editing, compositing, and video styling), and without too much interference or interruption.
