Try alternative to VirtualDub
like Avidemux, Shotcut, VidCoder -
No, never mind. I give up. Thanks anyway. You'd think there was something to install to make this possible in VDub. Apparently not.

The link I gave you in post #9, and roma_turok gave again in post 18, works just fine. AAC audio plays in VirtualDub using that ACM decoder.

Just for ha-ha's, here are captures of the contents of the Virtual Dub folder on my desktop and the contents of the plugins32.

Right. As I said, just posted it for ha-ha's. Playback of .mkv files with sound is not possible in VirtualDub.

Of course, I know it's possible, I just can't get it. Doesn't make sense... I have the recommended codecs installed (post #23). What do you suggest? Any .mkv file brings up the error message when playing in VD and, unbelievably, if I save out an avi (XViD MP4 compression) clip ("no audio" checked) edited from such an .mkv, it also has no sound when played back in any player. That should definitely not be happening and is maybe symptomatic of my problem. The original .mkv videos (not the clips I saved out, the original whole .mkv videos) play fine in all players like KMP, VLC.. Don't know if it's relevant, but I have FF mpeg 0.6.2 For Audacity installed, also XViD Video Codec on my system. Also, see what I have in the VD folders, pics in previous post.
