  1. Hi,

Since a month or so, I am not able to play most of my wma files, which were ripped from original audio CDs. The problem is not universally applicable to all of the licensed files because there are some, I am able to play(but that is only a minority, as that represents music from just one original audio CD).
A few times in between I am able to play these files, but I am unable to find any correlation with any action/task performed. This problem resurfaces again and again.
I tried restoring the computer, but didn't solved it. Restarted, fixed the registry errors, but to no avail.
Please note that I am also having blue screen errors from time to time (one error in a day or two). The blue screen of death comes just randomly and computer restarts.
I also vaguely remember that a few weeks back, I solved this problem by typing some command in command prompt. I tried to find out that web page(from where I got this command), but couldn't. It was may be a registry problem. But, I am not 100% sure about all this.

Below are the outcomes on different players:
    Winamp:- Nothing happens
WMP:- A message comes "The player is not installed correctly, please reinstall the player"
VLC:- Tries to play repeatedly, not able to play.

I recorded the messages of VLC on a verbosity of 2 i.e. debug mode:

Get somebody who knows what they are doing to look at your PC.
Sounds like the whole thing is messed up.

I concur. Also, stop ripping to WMA, use MP3 or MP4/M4A/AAC for more universal lossy file compatibility.

  4. If you ripped to WMA using Windows Media Player.... I think by default it adds some sort of copy protection which requires a license on the PC. You should disable the copy protection when ripping or chances are you won't be able to play the files with a different media player. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/rip-music-from-cd#rip-music-from-cd=windows-7
At one stage a relative was ripping CDs with Windows Media Player. After a reformat he had to rip them again (no license backup).

Here's how to backup the license files. Unfortunately, I think you may need to use WMP for that. You probably should re-install it, or download a newer version and install it, just to try to get it working for the moment. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/265473/EN-US

If the problem is copy protection though, eventually you're probably going to have to rip all those CDs again.... without it.

Yes, learn the lesson and drop Windows Media Player. You can convert your CDs to standalone MP3s or FLACs with foobar2000 or Winamp (this latter can use Lame ACM, IIRC).
