This kind of thing is going to be even more and more common with time. Some sellers are simply dishonest. Others are incompetent (they never bothered to test what they sold and just assumed it worked). Still others gave it a quick test, it didn't fail immediately, so they proclaimed it absolutely perfect. These old VCRs were never intended to be used 20+ years after manufacture and many are just showing their age and failing because of the passage of time. Add to this the fact that some users are so desperate to get certain models that they will willingly buy defective ones with the idea that if they get 2 or 3 broken ones, they can cobble the parts together to make 1 working model.

Try pressing EXIT on the remote control when first powering it up. That model fires up the settings menu after reconnecting to the mains.

  5. I've just done that but it does the search and says ' Error - no stations found '.
I just want to get the video to work not the channels.
Or do you need the channels to work before the VHS player works?

    That is a problem now.

In the 'bad' old days you could connect an aerial to the vcr and fire it up that way. Now there is no analogue over aerial so it would not detect a signal.

I guess the unit has reset itself to 'aerial' but you need to go through the menu to select 'line out'.

Just a thought. Could you connect your old vcr via aerial to your tv ? If so, daisy-chain the two vcrs. Aerial output from the old one to input on the new. Then output from the new to your tv. You might have to change the uhf channel on the new vcr as it could be the same as the old one. Then re-tune the tv to read the new vcr while a tape plays in the older one. It's a bit complex but until you can see all the menus on your tv you can not setup the vcr.

OK. No reason, if the tv has an antenna input, why you can not connect the vcr direct. You will have to tune it in to the uhf channel.

  9. Is there a specific way I should connect the VCR to the tv thats connected via aerial?
Do tv's still have this Q- Link function that allow vcr's to receive the channels?

I have an old Panasonic NV-HD620 that is still going strong. Of course it's not an S-VHS deck (either) so there is no way to use any kind of S-Video connection.
I bought my Philips VR-1100 S-VHS deck off of Ebay several years ago....still going strong and use it almost weekly. I got it dirt cheap for around €45, I then opened my big mouth about it here and on FaceBook and now the damn things are outrageously expensive.

  11. Is there such a thing as a digital tv to analogue signal converter?

This VCR tries to do the following when powered up after a reset:

    Tune the channels
    Set the RF output

Giving EXIT on the remote a few presses tells the machine that you don't want to do these things at the moment. If pressing EXIT does not set the VCR to flashing 12:00 then check the switch on the remote (if present) is not set to VCR2. If the deck is jammed on menu mode for more than say ten minutes then it may be faulty. I have the exact same machine.

Do you really want to have the VCR tuned to channels or do you want this to get you past the menu screen only? I have my FreeView box attached to my Panasonic video but via SCART so the video is not tuned to anything but that works great.

  17. Man- I think you've got the wrong end of the stick. My VCR WON'T PLAY MY VHS TAPES.
When I press PLAY on my vcr/remote control, nothing is coming on the screen. The sound comes on for a bit but then goes off.
    So is my VCR bust?

I'm just going through all the options that I have known give trouble in the past (I repaired VCR's for a major UK electronic chain). I think that your best option is to send it back for a refund as it sounds like something is wrong somewhere.

There is a nice looking NV-HS950 on eBay at the moment which has no menu screen and is an excellent player with time base correction and a digital comb filter.

A digital to analogue converter box will not help you.

Those links refer to the US - ATSC - broadcast system. Totally useless for the UK.

If you can hear sound then the video is playing.

But if you now have a picture from the VCR on the tv you should be able to access all the menu functions. Did you get a manual with the vcr ? If not, do a Google for it.

if you do not want to use Ebay then all you can do is trawl around the local tv repair shops and see if they have anything for you.

  22. Guess what? Something marvellous is happening.
I've been using the HEAD CLEANER about ten times now and the video is starting to appear a bit.
The HEADS must be so dirty!

If the heads are that dirty, no consumer-level cleaning tape will clean it sufficiently.

If you have a tape you can afford to lose, then play that one few times with some fast forwarding. Sometimes it is the tape that has gathered the grunge.

In your position, if you can not do a proper clean of the heads with the case open yourself, I would take it to a repair shop.

  24. I thought that fast forwarding on play makes a difference.
I reckon the previous owner must have spent all day watching porno videos.
I reckon there must be sperm on the heads.

    Spoken like a true idiot.

  26. It may be so dirty it requires direct cleaning, but what your describing sounds like the heads are stuffed and on their complete last legs. A deck still worth keeping for fast forwarding and repacking your tapes but other than that i dont think a hundred cleans will give you a viewable signal.

What would you expect to get ?

There is no longer any signal. So static is quite 'normal'.
