  1. A Prairie Home Companion
Weekly radio show with Garrison Keillor that has been broadcast for past 40 years.

Note: You can listen to old shows on demand streaming audio by going to:
    http://prairiehome.publicradio.org/programs/

If you want to download a show (like to put on your mp3 player), you can use the following url:
    http://167.88.156.221/phc/2014/06/28/phc_20140628_128.mp3
This will download the June 28, 2014 show.

To download other show dates, go to:
    http://prairiehome.publicradio.org/programs/

and get the exact date for the show that you want, then
modify the url (use above url ending in mp3 as pattern) in 2 places as shown in the following example. For example, to download the April 5 show (2014/04/05),
    use the following url:
    http://167.88.156.221/phc/2014/04/05/phc_20140405_128.mp3
So you can use the following url as a pattern to download any show ( replace x with show date in proper format as shown in above examples.
    http://167.88.156.221/phc/xxxx/xx/xx/phc_xxxxxxxx_128.mp3

    Note:
Previous URL (http://50.31.167.247/phc/xxxx/xx/xx/phc_xxxxxxxx_128.mp3) doesn't seem to work anymore.

Thank you so much--been trying various time-consuming methods and streaming audio recorders, etc., for several years now. Time to download before he retires...

  3. I tried the url recommended for download, but the only dates it work with are the ones given as examples. When I put another date it does not work.

  4. Well, things always change.
You can try this different one which seems to work now:
    http://167.88.156.221/phc/xxxx/xx/xx/phc_xxxxxxxx_128.mp3
So for example if you want to download April 16, 2016 use the following:
    http://167.88.156.221/phc/2016/04/16/phc_20160416_128.mp3
Or for example if you want to download March 5, 2016 use the following:
    http://167.88.156.221/phc/2016/03/05/phc_20160305_128.mp3
But I think Prairie Home Companion knows their days are soon over, and now they just let you download the show directly from their website. I am using Foxfire 25.0 and I now get this message when I go to their website - they say my browser/computer is too old and just click to download the show (see screenshot red circle).

How far back does that go...I tried a show from 1999 and it didn't work.

  6. How far back does that go...I tried a show from 1999 and it didn't work.
It would take someone from Vermont to ask that kind of question.
I'll give a description of how to download older shows, but it seems to take several hours to download one 2 hour show. Maybe someone here can pipe in with a faster easier method. Example given is for October 25, 1997 show.
First download and install Orbit which you can get here:
    http://files.videohelp.com/u/61125/OrbitDownloaderSetup242.exe
Then go to Prairie Home Companion website and click on "Listen to the whole show" (maybe right click) to download the
    25_phc
    (see screenshot)
Open this file in Notepad and you should see this:
    http://www.publicradio.org/tools/media/player/start/00:00:00:14.0/end/00:02:00:18.0/ph...10/25_phc.smil
Put the above in Firefox and download the
    25_phc.smil
Open that file in Notepad and look through you should find this (starts with rtsp and ends in rm):
    rtsp://mprrm.publicradio.org/5559/phc/1997/10/25_phc.rm
Start Orbit, open main screen from taskbar and enter above rtsp (file>enter new url to download).
    (see screenshot)
It should start downloading and be in C:\Downloads

  7. Hi all ,

    Thanks to jimdagys .

An other way , when got the link "rtsp:... .rm"
    Code:
    ffmpeg -i "rtsp://mprrm.publicradio.org/5559/phc/1997/10/25_phc.rm" -acodec libmp3lame -f mp3 publicradio.mp3
    Cheers .

  8. aazerty:
    1) Does it it take 2 hours to download via ffmpeg?
    2) When using ffmpeg, is there a way just to download the rm stream (not convert to mp3)?
    3) If so, what is the complete code to do that for the above example?
    4) Also, if I use ffmpeg to convert to mp3 (like the example you gave), what additional software do I need to get ffmpeg to convert to mp3?
    5) How do I install that software into ffmpeg?

    Many thanks to jimdagys!

I'm looking at the April 25, 1998 show, and there's no link to download the full show - neither of the above methods are working for it. This seems to be a problem with a lot of the 1998 shows - they're divided up into sections with no full show link. Does anyone have any advice?

  11. Yes, I see that there is no "Listen to the whole show" link. There are 18 segment audio files, however. I noticed that some of the old shows don't even have the segment files links, just nothing. The Orbit link that "should" work for the April 25, 1998 show ( if following the pattern on above Oct 25, 1997 example) should be:
    rtsp://mprrm.publicradio.org/5559/phc/1998/04/25_phc.rm
    but it doesn't work.
I downloaded all 18 segment audio files. I don't know if all 18 will cover the entire minutes of the 2 hour show.
I stored it in a zip file and you can download it here:
    http://files.videohelp.com/u/61125/phc19980425segments.zip
I would send a complaint to somebody that maintains the archives. Maybe they can fix the website and that would help a lot of other people too.
Note: Old show audio files are in the ra (Real Audio) format and play in VLC Media Player with no problem.

Thank you so, so much for that zip file, jimdagys - those clips contained exactly the parts of the show I needed!!!

I'm working my way backwards saving the shows, I've got 2006-2016 so far using your methods, and I'm slowly working my way through 2005 with Orbit. I sent a message to PHC earlier this week asking if there were full show links for the 1998 shows, but so far no response.

  13. feb 11, 2012 they went to 128 bit mp3. before that it is 64 bit. so the url changes eg http://167.88.156.221/phc/2011/04/16/phc_20110416_64.mp3

  14. Are any of you able to download the October 11, 2003 show which was replayed again (and archived again) on March 26, 2005? I can't even get the link to open to listen.

What I am trying to find is the episode where GK talks about at weddings they play a march at the end...not a fantasia, but a march. Anyone know where that is? I am hoping it's these episodes.

  15. There is only one Prairie Home Companion show (out of thousands) that I thought was outstanding, and that is the only one that I long ago downloaded the audio and saved it in my email. They play a wedding march in this episode. If it is the one you want, that would be quite a coincidence.
Link to audio (should play with vlc media player):

  16. THAT IS AMAZING!!!!! This is exactly the episode I am looking for. I have literally spent years looking for it off and on - and then you just happened to have it! Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU!

  17. This thread was a HUGE help in getting a large project started - I was attempting to save every episode that the site hosted in order to make a large flash drive that my mom could keep in her car for her numerous trips back and forth to care for her mom.

In light of yesterday's news, the archives were abruptly erased right as I was in the middle of a season. I'm devastated by the idea that these episodes could be lost forever.

By any chance, did someone else here save everything that they had? I have up to 2004 and some of 2005, plus most of Chris Thile's tenure. I'm missing from about May '05 through mid-2015. If anybody has these, please let me know. Thanks!

  18. There was somebody earlier in this thread (GreenBryn) who said he downloaded most of the shows. Maybe he will pipe in and help you.
I got a PM - somebody wanted the Wedding March show. Yes, that's the only show I have (plays with vlc).
Maybe Minnesota Public Radio will issue a takedown notice for the following link, so you better download it while you can.
    https://files.videohelp.com/u/61125/prairie.rm
All the newer shows have been deleted from the Prairie Home Companion website. Even if you have a link, it no longer works. However, for the above Wedding March show (2003/2005), the link still works. I am downloading it now with Orbit. Link to Orbit software: (https://files.videohelp.com/u/61125/OrbitDownloaderSetup242.exe).
    rtsp link to Wedding March:
    rtsp://mprrm.publicradio.org/5559/phc/2005/03/26_phc.rm
If you want to download random old shows, just use the above rtsp link and change the date to another Saturday, for example:
    rtsp://mprrm.publicradio.org/5559/phc/2005/03/19_phc.rm
is downloading a show. However, these rtsp links will likely soon be deleted.
Forty years of cultural icon just got wiped out with a few mouse clicks.

I have '97-May '05 in 128 - it's what the website had when I started backing things up. If anyone wants them, let me know. Would love it if someone has May '05 and onward to share!

Sent them a message; hopefully they can help. In the meantime, I'm going to start playing with the links you posted and see what I can work out.

edit: okay, Orbit downloaded and running. It's going at less that 3kbps...so forgive me if this is a really dumb question, since I've never heard of RTSP before, but is that basically a protocol that rips media content in real time? In other words, is it going to take two hours to rip each two hour broadcast that way? If so, I can't imagine being able to pull more than a handful of episodes before those links have also been killed.

I just heard the news: dang it dang it dang it. I hate it when archives are taken down without notice. I need to doublecheck exactly what I have because I got distracted from my downloading-PHC project, but I'm happy to share whatever I have. Give me a day or two to doublecheck my hard drive and I'll let y'all know what I've got (as well as what holes are in my collection that I need to fill).

  22. That method (Orbit/rtsp) rips in real time, 2 hours for a 2-hour show. I don't know of a faster method. I wouldn't worry about those old shows disappearing right now. The engineers are like monkeys - not too smart. They probably forgot about the old rtsp files.

Okay *cracks neck* I've had a chance to look through what I have organized, and here's what I've got for the time period of 1999-2016:

    ~*~
    I'm missing:
    1999 - all
    2000 - all
    2001 - 11 eps (2.24; 3.17; 3.24; 3.31; 4.07; 4.14; 4.21; 4.28; 5.05; 9.29; 12.29)
    2002 - 1 ep (3.16)
    2006 - 1 ep (11.11)
    2016 - 2 eps (12.24; 12.31)
    2017 - all

    ~*~
    I have:
2001 - almost all, .rm files (missing 11 eps listed above)
2002 - almost all, .rm files (missing 1 ep listed above)
    2003 - all, .rm files
    2004 - all, .rm files
    2005 - all, .rm files
2006 - almost all, .rm files (missing 1 ep listed above)
2007 - all, a few .rm but mostly .mp3 files
    2008 - all, .mp3 files
    2009 - all, .mp3 files
    2010 - all, .mp3 files
    2011 - all, .mp3 files
    2012 - all, .mp3 files
    2013 - all, .mp3 files
    2014 - all, .mp3 files
    2015 - all, .mp3 files
2016 - almost all, .mp3 files (missing 2 eps listed above)
    ~*~

It looks like the 2017 past shows might still be up on the PHC website, so I'm gonna check for sure and see if I can grab the newest eps I'm missing.

As for anything earlier that 1999, I don't have it organized yet. I got my hands on 265 GB worth of files from another collector: there's stuff from 1981-1990 and 1994-1996, but I have no idea if they're complete seasons or not. Files are in a mix of .aiff, .wav, and .mp3.

Here's what I have, straight from the website as of just a week or two ago:
    1985
    1996
    1997
    1998
    1999
    2000
    2000
    2001
    2002
    2003
    2004
    2005: January - July

Source: the "older" web page that had a drop-down menu for month and year. I would go through it and select each option available. If there was a live broadcast listed, I would go to the page for that show, view source, find the link for the 128kbps MP3 of the full show, and download it. (If it was a rebroadcast, there was no link to click on.) So each year's folder does not include re-broadcasts - only the live shows that aired that year. I haven't counted the total number of files yet, but it's a little over 31GB total.

I also have a folder from an old torrent that includes episodes from 2007-2015, but they're all "full" years (rebroadcasts included instead of being trimmed out) and '07-'12 are 64kbps. I was planning to keep barreling through the website as I'd done up to '05 and complete a better archive that was all 128kbps and excluded rebroadcasts in order to save space, but now that the website itself is down, I can't even do a simple comparison and delete extra files.

If anyone wants what I have, please let me know in a private message. Just need to figure out how to host that much data.

2016/2017 is still up on the website - I managed to snag the ones I'm missing from those, so I'm up to date on the current shows.

pitweasel - I'm definitely interested in snagging your eps, and I'll shoot you a PM with links to download mine as soon as I get them uploaded.

If anyone else needs any eps that I have, let me know!

  27. Somewhat similar to Prairie Home Companion is "Mountain Stage", a live two-hour weekly radio show hosted by the same person, (Larry Groce) since 1983. The last three years can be directly downloaded at the website:

I would be very interested in your old shows, I only have from 2009 onwards.
There is a thread over on /r/DataHoarder on reddit of people trying to build as complete a set as possible as well. As I mentioned there, I have hosting space and would be willing to host as complete a set as we can all build for the preservation of this great show.

I am looking for particular shows:

2/3/96 and one from January 1998.

    can someone email me those?

    wagnerbell@yahoo.com

I am so bummed that the archives have been wiped away just like that. If anyone knows where I can go to download them now, please post. Thanks so much.
