    Hello,

I don´t know why but smplayer 0.8.3 plays really fast and no audio either .

Never had any problems with it, except installing later versions ( dependencies issues ).

Can`t watch any video as the screen stays black with the counter at triple speed.

I´m on Lucid 10.04. I have a closed os , which basically means that if i try and install a newer kubuntu os , my hybrid pc won´t work properly.

Has anybody had this problem and solved it ?

    Thanks.

    Hello again,

Has nobody run into this problem before

  3. I am replying you just not to disappoint you as I do not use smplayer.

Answer to your question leads to several possibilities...

    1) May be they never ran into problem like yours, if they are using smplayer.

    2) Probably they are not using smplayer like me, so it is hard to tell about (broken) dependencies.
2.1) Try following command and see all dependencies are in tact.
    $>apt-cache depends smplayer
2.2) At last option remove and re-install smplayer from ubuntu distro softwares repo. Do not try to mix it with other Debian brands.
$>apt-get purge smplayer and $>apt-get --purge remove mplayer (both are same commands).
    2.3) Install mplayer and smplayer
    $>apt-get install mplayer smplayer

    3) The last possibility which more likely is that other members are not using Linux at all. There are only a few members who use linux. Mostly Windows users.

So, you should try ubuntu forum and see if you can find some masters there. Alternatively try ask.ubuntu.

I use smplayer in linux version 0.8.6, but I have not had any issues, so I can't really help. I'm running Linux Mint Debian version.
Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........

    What does that mean?

This means OP can run Lucid 10.04 (Lubuntu - a light weight desktop, I guess) without problem. But, his hybrid (assembled or modified but OLD) PC can not adopt KDE (Resource Hungry) Desktop Environment. OP's this statement has nothing to do with his main issue.

Ubuntu's Lucid 10.04 - Lubuntu picks up P-II, 128MB RAM, 40GB HDD like a charm, where as XP might be fumbling.
Torvalds TuX can sneak'in into FOSSKING any hardware and adapt nicely.
    That's why I LuV TuX!

Hi enim, i tried that first command -

    - apt-cache depends smplayer - below is a capture :

I went through them - one by one. Some where fine , others needed an upgrade and others got me confused.

On a positive note, i now have good video and sound, only on avi files - mkv,mp4 and above all h264 play very badly , sound is ok but picture freeze is bad. At least the time bar is back to normal.

I an still bewildered as to why all this is happening. Could this be linked to my PSU fan running so fast it sounds like a jet about to take off.

    Thanks for this help though.

  8. Assuming that you are using official software repo(s) of Ubuntu,

    |Depends: mplayer
    |Depends: mplayer-nogui
    |Depends: <mplayer-mt>
    Depends: <mplayer2>
As I remember correctly dependency preferences are also in same order, where as | means nearest alternative. In your case mplayer2 with brackets seems a virtual package to me which exists logically, but, not physically.

As mplayer, mplayer-nogui, mplayer-mt (may not be in your case) & mplayer2 are alternatives to each other, you need only ONE in your system, which is mplayer.

I guess, as I am not using s&mplayer co., it's mplayer2 causes trouble with smplayer.
To make sure it is installed in your system
    $>apt-cache show mplayer2
L@@k for word "installed" and file size.
You can try same command for mplayer, mplayer-nogui & mplayer-mt.

If mplayer2 already installed in you system,
To figure out it is mplayer2, try following command
$>mplayer2 "/home/Path to/video/some.vid" (you can break it by ^c anytime.)
replace path with actual path to video file
replace file name some.vid with actual video file name with proper extension.

This will open up a small windows and you can watch how mplayer2 is playing the video.
    1) If video plays faster,
    It's mplayer2, causes problems
    apt-get --purge remove mplayer2
    apt-get install mplayer

    2) If video playes OK,
    It's smplayer,
You need to go through detailed settings of smplayer which I really do not know.
In that case I would recommend you to shuffle smplayer manual.

I hope, by the end of this exercise you will come to know what's going on and hopefully you will resolve the smplayer issue.

    Annex:
Just in case, if you wanna cut-short rather than going through smplayer configuration,
Make sure that you are using Official Software Repo(s)
    As I stated before...
2.2) At last option remove and re-install smplayer from ubuntu distro softwares repo. Do not try to mix it with other Debian brands.
$>apt-get purge smplayer and $>apt-get --purge remove mplayer (both are same commands).
    alternatively,
$>apt-get --purge remove *mplayer* will purge everything related to mplayer.
    2.3) Install mplayer and smplayer
    $>apt-get install mplayer smplayer
    Should work equally good.

  9. I went through them - one by one. Some where fine , others needed an upgrade and others got me confused.
If you did not mess up with software sources repo, and if you are using only Ubuntu's Softwares Repo, you should updrade upon your choice.

On a positive note, i now have good video and sound, only on avi files - mkv,mp4 and above all h264 play very badly , sound is ok but picture freeze is bad. At least the time bar is back to normal.
I guess, mpayer should be able to decode everything - avi, mkv, or mp4 by default.
I am not a mplayer expert anyways. Someone can assist you further.
    Once you successfully install mplayer,
    Try also run same command
apt-cache depends mplayer and see if everything is installed or not.

I an still bewildered as to why all this is happening. Could this be linked to my PSU fan running so fast it sounds like a jet about to take off.
Most of the time software has nothing to do with PSU, but, definitely with CPU.
Your PSU fan takes off like a jet because of either...
    1) Faulty PSU, some minor shorts drawing more power.
Turn Off PC. Wait for 10~20 minutes.
    Disconnect & Remove PSU.
    Open up PSU.
Blow it with air and remove all accumulated dust.
Also blow air and remove dust from mother board too, at same time.
    Install & Reconnect PSU.
    - OR -
    2) Faulty Mother Board draws more power from PSU.
You can still blow air & remove dust as mentioned before, see if it helps.
If still PSU fan takes off like a jet, you need assistance from HardWare Specialist.

Many thanks for the time your putting into this issue enim.

This is getting a little too techy for me.

I switched to the base 0.6.8.2 version and the results are the same.

Too many unknowns, i think i will wait for the technician to come back from his holidays.

    Thanks for everbody who helped.

And, this is the one of reason which makes me to refrain from offering helping hands most of the time.
