    LG GH24NSBO sata internal
i recently bought this writer to replace my older external lg super multi GSA-E40L
as when the dvd had finnished burning it would not play on a normal dvd player
    only the x-box and pc/laptop

    im having issues burning dvd-r
ive tried maxell dvd-r 16x discs
    traxdata dvd-r 16x
    and
cheap home brand dvd+rw 4x from the local Supermarket

the problem i have is i try burning an already converted dvd movie say 2gb
the maxell and traxdat take about 1 hour to burn at 8x
and the rw burns in about 10 min at 4x

there is no lower burn settings for the maxell or traxdata discs only option it gives me is 8 or 16

if any one has got any information i would be very grateful

You're using crap media, which is part of your problem. The only good discs you can probably buy in the UK are Verbatim (avoid the Life series if they sell it there - not sure if that is a US only designation or not - Life is cheap crap, but all other Verbatim is great).

Burning at slower speeds and I mean no more than 4x, can sometimes enable problem crap media to perform better.

Your drive slowness sounds like a "your burner is in PIO mode" problem. Are you running XP in this computer? If so, then you may need to research forcing the burner to stop using PIO mode.

Use the free ImgBurn for burning. EVERYTHING else is far inferior.

LG burners are a big OK, but they are not the best. Pioneer is hands down the best in my opinion.

That last part pertains to every brand of media you mentioned!!

    Burning with what ?
Converted with what to exactly what ?
The same file burns slower at a faster speed but faster at a slower speed between R & RW media ?
    And are the "RW's" actually "RW's" or +R's ?
As +R's also have the RW logo on them when they are not rewritable.

Does that even come into play with a SATA drive ?
And his specs have 8.1 listed as is OS ?
I am wondering if he is using something that is converting before burning ?
Just seems like way too much weirdness going on without enough specific information.

    thanks for the responce,
i have found that the disc will burn at 8x using nero burning rom 10
i was trying to burn them using convert x to dvd 5.0.0.74

the media id on the maxell discs comes back as
    [DVD-R:MBI 01RG40]
Manufacturer Name : [Moser Baer India Ltd.]

which is poor but its the same pack that works on 3 other writers 1 lg and 2 hp
thats what i could not understand

ill have to download imgburn and try that

    the only
    verbatim ive seen are these

my machine is an intel i5 4gb ram running windows 8.1
when i had the pc built 3 weeks ago
my new writer had not arrived so they gave me an old hp HP DH-16AAL-DT2 writer to put me on untill it came
that burns to the disc perfect

ive converted films using convert x to dvd 5.0.0.74 as i have for a while now
ive always burnt them with the same program and had no issues burning to the maxell discs
with the old external writer and a HP DH-16AAL-DT2 that came in the machine when i bought it

i had a new pc built
    Intel I5
    4 GB Ram
    windows 8.1
    1TB + 500GB HDD

the writer got lost in the post
the builder gave me his old HP DH-16AAL-DT2
but didnt know how much use it had, had

i convert films using convert x to dvd 5.0.0.74 and burn them with the same program
    onto maxell dvd-r 16x
ive used the same disc for years with minimal issues

the new lg drive arrived so i had it installed and set off burning an allready conerted film to test it

every time i tried to burn it would start of at a normal burn speed, speed right up for a few moments then slow right down
taking about 1 hour or so to burn

i figured it was the writer that was at fault
went to maplins and bought a samsung one for £40
had the same problem, so i took that back for a refund

i had a few other makes of dvd's layinig around so i tested those burning the same 2gb film
the maxell 16x dvd-r would burn at 8x and take about 1 hour to complete
the traxdata 16x dvd-r would burn at 8x and take about 1 hour to complete
i found an old rewritable supermarket brand disc in the draw
    asda 4x dvd+rw
set it of burning at full 4x and it completed in around 10 min

ive updated the firmware from lg's site and it still the same

i then decided to try burning the same converted film with nero burning rom 10
    using the maxell discs
the burn was completed in around 8 min at 8x

so now i dont know what to think
    is the problem the
    discs
    the writer
    convert x to dvd
    windows 8.1
    or a conbination of all

Use imgburn first and tell us what happens.
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".

I truly wish I could get paid every time somebody like you said that. "But I've used this crap media for YEARS I tell ya, YEARS, and not only are the greatest things ever, they wash my car for me and pay my bills too! I would marry them if it was legal to do so." Whatever man. I've heard it all before.

Until you are willing to accept the advice that multiple members here told you that YOUR DISCS SUCKS AND ARE BAD, we are kind of limited in what we can do. If you don't want to accept that, there's not much point in us going on further.

By the way, check some of your older burns of these "great" discs and see if they still play. You might be surprised to find out that discs you burned a few years ago from Maxell no longer work or have serious playback problems. This is because they are ... wait for it... BAD QUALITY. Also, thanks for ignoring the suggestion to use ImgBurn. I'm not seeing any point in sticking around any longer here.
