Technicolor Notebook Not Working

Hello

I have a MSI U130 Notebook which has stopped working.

Problem: When the Notebook is turned on it goes.

Red screen - green screen - blue screen - horizontal coloured stripe screen - grey screen - grey and black stripe screen horizontal and width ways - black with thin white line around screen

Back to red screen and repeat

I have important files on HD so i don't want to reboot. Grateful for any help.

the good news,, your HDD is salvageable
just take it out,, it's probably still good

the bad news,,
your graphics card is fried

a good way to test this,, hook the notebook to an external monitor
(if you have the ports to do so)

Tried it. No picture at all.

Shut it down and remove the drive, it should be good.

Definitely sounds like a bad video circuit, could be RAM.

Still the same, I have to say the H-D is nearly full.

Curious what you found out, and also want to emphasize the possibility that bad RAM is causing the problem. The screen pattern sounds a bit like an internal diagnostic memory check, and often on those units the video card shares RAM with the system.

If two sticks, remove one at a time, if only one, see if you can borrow a stick to test. Don't think I'd buy a new stick just for testing, at least not without looking at it.

Is the color pattern you describe extremely stable, no variation at all?

That looks like a video diagnostic, it could originate from the graphics controller, but I doubt it. That's an Atom N450 based netbook with the graphics controller integrated into the CPU, it shares RAM with the system. I've seen monitors run through a similar diagnostic when they were powered with nothing connected. I think this is the more likely scenario, the CPU is directly soldered to the motherboard and has developped some bad solder joints (559 BGA), the system won't run as the CPU is not working, the rest of the components still come on including the monitor. It's possible to salvage the CPU by indirectly applying low heat to the motherboard near the CPU (but not onto the CPU) until the solder melts, there may be a local computer repair shop that could do it for you, I know of some that charge $100 for the job. IMHO it's not worth it, a $100 buys you a decent tablet nowaday.
