  1. i just wanted to ask how would i go about getting blocking out of dark areas and
basically just what is causing the blocking in the dark areas

the rip is raw i remuxed it into mkv with megui and it's 1080p
and the encode is going to 720p

    Im using xvid4psp 5.10.330.0

    settings are
btw it's crf 2 pass there was no difference in crf and 2 pass quality

    Encoding settings : cabac=1 / ref=8 / deblock=1:-4:-4 / analyse=0x3:0x133 / me=umh / subme=9 / psy=1 / psy_rd=1.00:0.60 / mixed_ref=1 / me_range=20 / chroma_me=1 / trellis=2 / 8x8dct=1 / cqm=0 / deadzone=21,11 / fast_pskip=0 / chroma_qp_offset=-12 / threads=12 / lookahead_threads=3 / sliced_threads=0 / nr=0 / decimate=0 / interlaced=0 / bluray_compat=0 / constrained_intra=0 / bframes=8 / b_pyramid=2 / b_adapt=2 / b_bias=0 / direct=2 / weightb=1 / open_gop=0 / weightp=2 / keyint=250 / keyint_min=23 / scenecut=40 / intra_refresh=0 / rc_lookahead=60 / rc=2pass / mbtree=1 / bitrate=5040 / ratetol=1.0 / qcomp=0.80 / qpmin=0 / qpmax=69 / qpstep=4 / cplxblur=20.0 / qblur=0.5 / vbv_maxrate=20000 / vbv_bufsize=25000 / nal_hrd=none / ip_ratio=1.40 / aq=1:1.00

i'm trying to keep it as ps3 compatablity

quality is really great in light scenes, the blocking isn't really noticable on the 60" just on the pc moniter.

i've done mutiple encodes with different ranges and me algorithms but not much difference in terms of quality,
just wanted to know if i could get rid of the blocking at all.

Does the original rip have any blocking? If it doesn't then use a cq of 16 so no blocking shows up,if the original rip has blocking then there's nothing you can do to get rid of what i call moire effect due to low bitrates in black scenery.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

You could try decimate=1, file size will increase though. Another possibility is bump up the aq a little at a time.
