    just wanted to know what was the very first ever video codec ever made ?

    Probably Digital Video Interactive, or "DVI". See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Video_Interactive. That was in 1987/88. Down the road a few years it mutated into Indeo.

    For actual "codec" and not interface it would be the cost211 video codec, early 80's.

    This link: http://www.pha.jhu.edu/~sundar/intermediate/history.html shows some information regarding the history of codecs, though it is VERY incomplete (doesn't include anything about DVI, or Intel's work, nor Apple's, nor early work done by AVID, nor the ample work done throughout in universities).

    @Bjs, DVI was both an interface & architecture AND a codec.

  7. Yep, first video codecs was based on DPCM (and various different hybrid combinations of DPCM) - Vector Quantization, DCT or wavelets are much younger...
