I burned an avi (according to properties of movie) and although it plays fine through Wi9ndows media player when I burned it to disk (dvd) it plays fine in my dvd player except there is no sound. I also tried it in my laptop and again it plays the movie fine except for the no sound issue. I appreciate any help.

Burned as a data dvd or converted to dvd-video?

What is the audio in the avi? Identify with mediainfo.

And did you just burn it as a data disc? So you see the avi file on the dvd/cd?

You can reconvert the audio to mp3 with for example avidemux, open avi, under video choose copy, under audio choose mp3 and save as an new avi. Burn it.

Not really. Baldrick is just making a wild ass guess based on what little info you have provided. You've answered none of his questions. If his guess fails to solve your problem, you're back at square one.
