I'll get to the point right away
I want to capture TV and re-encode/transcode it to suitable formats ..
So I have a Set-top-box and provider : Big Tv India
It gives you Standard definition and both res 4:3 and 16:9
This is what the back panel looks like

Now I want to know what hardware I need to buy so that I'm able to capture tv shows for personal use
Things that work via the USB port will be cool
*I dont want to buy something which needs to be fixed on the motherboard .. I'm not good at putting things onto mobos!
I would be thankful if you give me ebay links to the products!

PC specs : (I dont want to use my regular pc for this task .. so I built a below average rig )
    CPU : Intel core i3 4130 3.4Ghz (IV Generation)
    RAM : 4Gigs Corsair
HDD : 1TB seagate ( I suppose this would be sufficient .. If not I have a few TBs of portable ones)
    Graphics : Onboard
OS: Linux ; Ubuntu saucy (I'm a bit lazy to install the MS Windows ... kind of messes with my partition tables heesh: )

You are only allowed to discuss how to capture tv for personal use. Sharing stuff on a torrent network is not okey.

  6. I'm not sure exactly how your unit works, but I have a set top box with similar outputs to yours.

I capture to MPEG2 @8000kbps via the composite video using a Grabster AV400. Stereo audio is set to 224kbps.
It's sufficient for my needs anyway.

This is the model I've got and I've been using it for years:

Hey dude thought I would help you out. Nice you're using a linux based OS, I use Debian myself. Regardless I have some suggestions:

    http://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

This is a good resource for capturing anything on linux. You have a composite and component out. The only linux compatible component out capture card I know of is the hd pvr 1212 by hauppauge. It has a hardware encoder so it would convert the lossy mpeg2 into h264. Not ideal but it would allow you to capture hd content and is v4l compatible with linux so no special drivers. Here's some links to it:

    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xhd+pvr+121&_nk...at=0&_from=R40

You can mess around with what you type in the search box but hd pvr 1212 or hauppauge 1212 should get you some results. In fact let me find some new:

    http://www.amazon.com/Hauppauge-1212-Definition-Personal-Recorder/dp/B0018LX0DY/ref=sr...ds=hd+pvr+1212

    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_from=R40&LH_ItemCondition=3&LH_BIN=1&_nkw=hd+...r+1212&_sop=15

Also here's a myth tv link on the hauppauge hd pvr:

    http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Hauppauge_HD-PVR

Note on how it says the 1212 and 1445 are the only models supported under linux so try to aim for those two.

Now if you're not recording hd content and don't mind 480i content then you can use your simple composite out and capture mpeg2 that way. There's a whole bunch of capture cards that use different chipsets, the cx231xx series are newer so they don't have too much support, the phillips saa7113 is a digitizer from 1999 so it has great support under linux. In fact it's used in both the easycap the dazzle. The easycap also has a usb bridge chip that communicated with the digitizer. Make sure to get the empia or the syntek ones. Here's some links:

    http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Easycap

    http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Stk1160

    http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Em28xx_devices

    http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Conexant_CX2310x

    http://easycapexpertti.mybisi.com/products/easycap-ezcap-devices?s=pricelow&page=1

That last link states the chipset that the easycaps use. I personally went for the easycap116 model but it and the dc60+ with the empia chipset are identical. I just liked the design of the 116 in comparison to the dc60+. That seller also has an ebay shop. Hold on:

    http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=&_ssn=remedyer&_sop=15

The main reason why I chose this seller is because they list the actual chipset used as there appears to be 4 different easycaps with different chips used but they look identical on the outside. It can get confusing. Also:

    http://www.ezcap.tv/usb-video-capture/ezcap116-capture-card

I didn't buy from them as I didn't want to deal with the currency exchange of pounds to us dollars.

I totally forgot to list some cx231xx based devices. Let me get that for you:

    http://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Video_via_USB

    http://www.amazon.com/Hauppauge-610-USB-Live-Digitizer-Capture/dp/B0036VO2BI/ref=sr_1_...ds=usb+capture

    http://www.amazon.com/August-VGB100-Video-Capture-Device/dp/B008F0SARC/ref=sr_1_6?ie=U...ds=usb+capture

    http://www.amazon.com/Diamond-VC500-Touch-Capture-Device/dp/B000VM60I8/ref=sr_1_7?ie=U...ds=usb+capture

All of these are conexant based devices so they may have some issues. Check out the linuxtv for more information. If you want confidence that it will work go for the phillips saa7113 based devices as they don't require firmware (usually) and they're known to work since the decoder is so old. Old in this case is not necessarily a bad thing. Only difference I could find out between the phillips and the conexant was that the former was a 9 bit ADC and the latter was a 10 bit ADC. I don't believe that would make too much a difference especially for 480i content. If you want HD go for the hd pvr 1212 or 1445.

    Good luck!

    Oh great @TheDrifter363 !
Thanks a lot for replying. Seems like the Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR can do the job for me provided the linux based platform I'm working with . I'll try to learn the basic 480i videos first then It would be good to play with higher resolutions.
I never worked with interlaced videos before .. but I'm looking forward for it!

Let me know which device you plan on picking up, I am curious as to the approach you will take. The hd pvr 1212 is nice in that it can record hd content, I just hate the fact that it's a lossy approach. Limitations of the usb 2.0 throughput it seems. It's unfortunate none of the usb 3.0 lossless capture devices are supported under linux. That would be awesome.
