Is there a quick formula to get equivalent quality? 5.1 to 5.1.

  2. AC3 Equivalent bitrate = DTS bitrate * (2 x Listener's Ear Sensitivity)

  4. Formula gives finite & unique solution for only and only for deaf, where listening sensitivity is 0.

  5. For AC3 448k is enough, and 640k is considered to be transparent.
Above this very few listener can distinguish real difference.

    Have a smile....

After posting my reply, I was doing some rough & crude experiment to figure out my own listening sensitivity. I asked my better-bitter half to whisper something in a very low volume and pitch very close, next to my ear. I could listen "I LUV U", I was pleased.

I asked to whisper same at a distance of 5 ft, I could able to catch "I LUV U", I was pleased.
I asked to whisper same at a distance of 10ft, I could not listen anything at all.
I asked to repeat, I could not listen at all. But, suddenly my bitter half started laughing out of loud. I asked what did you say?, Reply was "Nothing, Just Leave it!" I said I insist, "What did you say?", I hear a shout *U, now you listen.
    I said "NO".

So listening sensitivity varies with individuals, distance and contents what individual wanna listen to.

  6. If you extract DTS 5.1 core from a Blu-Ray, the bitrate is 768 kb/s. Of course, DTS-MA lossless is 1.5 Mb/s, but I suppose you don't mean that?
    DD 5.1 (AC3) has a max bitrate of 640 kb/s.

Discounting arguments as to whether Dolby Digital is more efficient with bitrate, I'd say you could consider DTS core and DD 5.1 at 640 kb/s as roughly equivalent.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

    AC3's 128kbps per channel = DTS's 256kbps per channel

The expression above considers the LFE channel uses a bitrate nearly-equal to zero.

The expression above indicates that 1509kbps for 5.1 DTS is overkill.

The expression above points out that DTS, Inc. understands more of marketing than of complying with their own specs

    Thanks everyone.

    Another hearing test:
A couple in an old age home have just celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary. Sitting on their little verandah they speak:
He: I'm proud of you, dear.
    She: What?
He, much louder: I'm proud of you, dear.
    She: What?
He, almost shouting: I'm proud of you, dear.
She: That's alright, I'm tired of you too.

    Hi!
on Russian websites are always blamed for the fact that you are using AC3, instead of the crystal-clear / velvet DTS audio.

Putting it on a flash-drive for a friend (not possible to burn BluRay at the moment.) His Sony TV won't play DTS through the USB port. Won't play MKV or Xvid either.

whether there is a good audio system 5.1, for a sense of using DTS?

I have came across Japanese website where only pcm is acceptable, not even DTS.
I have also came across Rhodesian website where only iSAC is acceptable.
