I'm running Windows 7 with Gmail. My notifier has just stopped working. Can't find the reason. I'm always wary of downloading new apps, so can anyone tell me what they use.

If you used Google's notification app, they discontinued it. http://www.theverge.com/2014/1/16/5316748/google-quietly-kills-off-its-notifier-servic...l-and-calendar

However if you use Google Chrome, Firefox or Safari, you can still use Google's Desktop Notification. https://support.google.com/mail/answer/1075549

But don't you have to have GMail running to use it? My old one just ran in the background and gave me an audio alert

Yes, you do need to have Gmail open in the browser.
