This may be relevant to burners as it is with stand-alone dvd-recorders. I have two recorders and, in theory, both should be able to use 2x disks. One will accept them fine but the other refuses them. I think it is down to the dye.

Most disks are not manufactured by the name on the disk. Certainly Sony do not make theirs and it is my Sony recorder that refuses Sony disks.

You may also wish to expand on your problem.

Is this happening with only the new disks you have bought or ALL disks including older ones that you have ?

Your burner is dying. This problem is a sign of it. You won't be able to fix this by doing anything to the burner or by using specific brands of DVD-RW.

  8. You could try a firmware update, check the manufacturer's support site.

    It's dying.

The lower-reflectivity/compatibility RW/RAM media goes first.
Then write-once 'R' media is next.
    Then ROM media goes.

And it often happens pretty quickly, in a matter of months.

Buy a new one. DVD burners are cheap now ($20). I still remember when mine was $900 in 2001.

What lordsmurf said plus my experience has been that the ability to burn DL media actually goes first. You may be able to squeeze some more successful burns of DVD+/-R discs but I'd advise against trying to burn DL media if RW discs are already problematic.
