Im looking for help with a video. i am trying to upload a video MP4 to a website for a job application. I looked up ways on how to reduce file size in order to meet the requirements of the application. i made the following changes using Handbrake,
    Reference frames changed from 1-4
Audio settings: bitrate changed from 160 to 128
    Made it web optimized

This shrunk the size from 265MB to 98Mb but I dont know what it actually did

Im extremely new to this whole thing so please be understanding that I am just looking for help, the file is fine, perfect size and plays fine on my MacBook Pro using DivX. When I upload it to the site and play it there, there is a 20 second portion of the video that has lost its sound, is this my fault or the fault of the website??

    PLEASE HELP ME OUT PEOPLE!!

With no access to the original mp4, or to the website, and no clues as to what the technical requirements for the video to be posted on the website actually are, I don't think you will receive much help.

The only requirements for the video to be posted are that it is MAX 100MB and is one of the major file types. .mp4 .mov .mpg.

Info that I can gleam from the file (really not the best at computers) is Dimensions 1280x720
    Codecs H.264, AAC
    Color Profile: HD(1-1-1)
    Duration 04:43
    Audio Channels: 2
    Size: 98.2MB

    Set Normal preset
    Set Avg Bitrate to 2500:

    "Set Normal preset
    Set Avg Bitrate to 2500"

    All done, and no change.

I think the problem is actually with the website and whatever flash player they're using, as every version of the vid I have in both .mp4 and .mov are all completely fine. Just didn't want to mention it to the potential employers incase there was something I can do.

Thanks for the help, any other opinions will still be massively appreciated.

  7. 20 second lost sound in the beginning of video or in the end?
    Quote Quote
  8. Yes, it's probably an issue on their end

What site is it ? Is it a re-encoding site like youtube ? Or do they stream the video as is ?

Did you use "constant frame rate" as shown in the screen shot ? "variable frame rate" might cause some issues with some decoders if it's a re-encoding site

What is the original video format ? Use mediainfo (view=>text) copy & paste the results back here

  11. And what was the mediainfo report of the "original" (before handbrake)

What do you mean by "random" ? Does the problem occurs at different places each time you tried to upload something different ? Be more specific . And does audio come back (and in sync) at the end ?

    poisondeathray, it's this site: http://www.thevitalingredient.ie

when they view the video I assume they'll stream as is using whatever is on the site right now.

sorry plisondeathray, by random I mean it's peculiar, to me it would be more understandable if it was at the beginning or end, or lost throughout.
the video is made of a series of video clips, all put together to make up the vid. This has worked perfectly, putting it from my phone to computer has been fine, shrinking the file size via Handbrake has been fine. The problem occurs when it's uploaded to the site.

  15. Nice... do you get free samples of Whiskey ? You know... to ensure quality standards

If you look at the previous successful applicants, those videos are hosted by youtube . Is the one you're using internal or youtube ?

I would try to stream copy the audio (in case re-encoding to AAC audio is giving them problems for whatever reason)

Of course there's free samples, have to know what i'm trying to sell

The previous successful ones are indeed hosted by youtube but I think that's after they select the successful ones they then upload them to Youtube for people to see, the whole thing is internal on that vital ingredient site first.

"I would try to stream copy the audio (in case re-encoding to AAC audio is giving them problems for whatever reason)"

I do apologise if i'm annoying but the above sentence means nothing to me. I am trying to learn.

  19. How did you join the clips (what software) to get the 256MB file ?

Try the audio passthru option in handbrake instead (it will copy the audio, instead of re-encoding it)

Would you use AAC Passthru or Auto Passthru

This is where things get stupid, haha. Okay so I made the video on my BlackBerry Z10 and from there used the software Story Maker to edit the clips and join them together, from there loaded it up to the Mac and actually found info on this forum that redirected me to Handbrake to shrink it. and the file was perfect. It had shrunk and was the exact same as the larger file.

To all that have offered suggestions, I'm going to give it all a go tomorrow, but you may all be lifesavers and have helped a computer idiot out!.

  23. If that still doesn't work, you can try another compression (e.g. use CBR MP3 instead of AAC) , in case something on their end doesn't like AAC (but it' s unlikely)
