Hi,
I'm trying to burn a 14 minute movie to a dvd. When I play it on tv, the picture jitters/looks pixelated every other second. The dvd menu also does this. Is it because the movie is hd and it's being burned on normal dvd not bluray?
These are the QT movie settings:
Animation
29.97 fps
1280x720
48 kHz , stereo
To burn, I'm using dvdstyler and a sony dvd+r 4.7gb disc:
Video bitrate. Auto
Audio bitrate. 192 kbit/s
Aspect ratio 16:9, audio- AC3 (48 kHz)
Burn speed at x1
Should I just render the qt movie at NTSC settings in After effects and then burn to a dvd?
I am new to this, so I appreciate any help. Thank you.

Perhaps you could Attach a sample of the VOB video file from the DVDR to show what you mean.
-
Could this be an interlaced vs progressive issue?
I'm assuming the original video file doesn't have the issue you are describing.
Use media info to identify the video details of the original file.
If the original is progressive keep it progressive but use standard def resolution.
Hopefully that will correct any problems if that was the issue.
Otherwise I'd suggest using a different program to make the dvd if that isn't the issue.
Avstodvd does a great job and is freeware.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
Hi,
Yes, the original Qt movie file is fine. It's happening with the encoding process. I just don't know what to use as settings. I even tried adobe media encoder. So I am setting something wrong. I used mediainfo and here is what it said about the original file:
My composition settings in after effects are as follows:
If I render from after effects as SD, what should I select below for NTSC?:
I am in the process now of trying Avstodvd. If you when to see any red flags, please let me know. Thank you. -
Hi,
I uploaded what happens on youtube, but then that video doesn't look the same as what I see in person (so it's pointless to show the link). The issue is that every other second the picture jitters or flickers like the pixels are being pushed to the side and then back in place. What's the best way to capture what is happening after it's encoded or burned to a dvd to show you? The movie isn't even that complicated; it's a bunch of photos with 1 second fade transitions on each end (slideshow with simple title sequence).
I also tried 4 versions of mpeg-2 encoded movies with media encoder and all of those jitter as well.
Here's the info dvdstyler provides when movie and menus are ready to be burned to dvd (the preview):

Attached wrong file from above (0_Music_Render.mp4). This is the VOB from AVStoDVD. i also attached the log text file.I did a preview of the dvd menu in AVSTODVD and the preview of the menu flickers/jitters. Thanks for your help.

The issue is called keyframe pumping. In this case, every Intra-frame is lower quality than the surrounding predicted frames and the I-frames pop up every 0.4 seconds because of DVD specs.
The log indicates you are encoding to MPEG-2 with ffmpeg. See if you can set it to use HCEnc instead. (I've never used the software.) -
Code:

Hi,
Ok, can you just check this file? I believe using HCEnc VBR 1-pass solved it... I notice a little flicker now and then but it is very, very minor. Would you suggest lowering the bitRate? Right now it is on AUTO Calculate. Here are the settings.
Thank you sooooo much - I have been looking for a solution for almost a week. -
-
These are the choices for matrix. Would you suggest MPEGSTD? Or something else? Thanks.
-
FOX1 will definitely result in higher bitrates but I don't know if it's a optimal choice in this scenario.
manono might have a better suggestion, he even has some matrices named after him (look in the screenshot) . You can try PM ing him if he doesn't reply
https://forum.videohelp.com/members/54890-manono
For pure slideshow content , high bitrate CBR encoding might be a good approach as well
2pass VBR becomes more important when you have different types of content, bitrate is allocated more ideally -
Most of the matrices HCEnc uses aren't even for DVD but were developed for use with XviD encodes. The only pure DVD matrices are the MPEG, the MPEG STANDARD, the three FOXes and the three MANONOs. I'd go with FOX1 as it's the best of the bunch and I think its use won't result in too high of a Q factor, considering how static a slideshow is. The only parts using a lot of bits are the dissolves.
If you don't care about the file size, you could do a single-pass Constant Quantization encode. But I don't know what its numbers mean as they're different from those in CCE. Maybe try with the default 5. And I'd raise the max bitrate to 9500 as your audio is only 192 and HCEnc promises not to go over the max bitrate set.
And I also agree with pdr that a high-bitrate CBR encoding might be useful for this kind of material. Does HCEnc even do CBR encodes? Anyway, you could set both the minimum and average bitrates higher to better approximate a CBR encode.
But it's a pretty good-looking encode already, much better than the first one.
Were some of the pictures taken from video?? The reason I ask is that both cars show aliasing, something that resembles bad deinterlacing to me.Last edited by manono; 8th Dec 2013 at 03:03.

Hi,
The photos were taken with a nikon d300. I used after effects and imported all the pics into the timeline with 1 second fade ins and outs (each pic 4 seconds long). The movie lasts 14 minutes. Then i rendered a QT movie 1280x720, animation, 29.97 fps. At this point, the movie was fine. When i used a dvd authoring software, DVDstyler, and checked the dvd (sony dvd+R, 4.7gb) on my tv (played on PS3) I noticed the jitters every second or so. I can't seem to find any settings in that program to change encoding. So I have tried for almost a week to find a solution; about four other dvd authoring programs and adobe media encoder. I need to have a dvd menu, also, and that is why i tried dvdStyler (easy user interface).
I used to be able to burn my movie on my brother's mac using iDvd and had no poblems. Now, iDvd is no longer available. -
You can still use DVDStyler or any other authoring program with the output from HCEnc. Feed it the DVD-compliant video and audio and just use it for its authoring ability. It won't reencode. Ordinarily, though, NTSC 29.97fps material is encoded as interlaced but I don't know if any authoring program will object that this was encoded as progressive.

CBR could be simulated using descent CQ and VBV max bitrate set, HC encoder has a check box for that. Never tried that. Basicaly like with x264 encoder. Question is how precisely HCencoder keeps tha VBV max rate .
-
Hi,
I think FOX1 worked - I burned it on a dvd and played it. Looks a thousand times better than my original try. Thank you all so much for your help. I learned a lot in a very short span of time. Thanks again.
