Im currently trying to do a DVD to DVD copy using Nero 8 Recoder. I've tried the "DVD to DVD" option, "Main Movie to DVD" option, I've done the "Compile a DVD" option, and it usually successfully burns, but when you go to play the DVD, halfway through the movie, it'll freeze, or get hung up for minutes at a time, and is unwatchable.

I'm currently using single layer, Sony DVD+Rs. I read that Sony DVD-R (Minus R) is a better choice, so I was maybe gonna grab a small pack to see how they work. I figured I'd ask anyone here if they had any suggestions for a good brand and type of blank DVDs (including +R or -R), maybe a brand that is known for working well with Nero 8?

    I have two burners:
An internal HP burner, and an external, USB Sony burner.

    I appreciate any suggestions.

Sony DVDs are junk. Nero (for burning DVDs) is junk.
Verbatim DVDs, DVDFabDecrypter and ImgBurn(to burn).

    Stop using Nero.
Stop trying DVD to DVD copying.

Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden are the ONLY consistently good DVD discs available in North America any more. You will have to buy Taiyo Yuden online from shops like http://www.rima.com, http://www.supermediastore.com and others. Everything Verbatim makes is good EXCEPT their "Life" series. Those are low quality. Avoid those.

Sony is hit and miss according to reports, using both the best and the worst media manufacturers. Some hardcore Sonyphiles insist that most of their North American media is good, but we've also had reports of them using the worst manufacturers. Honestly, it's more trouble than it's worth to try to figure out whether Sony is good or not before you buy it, so we just recommend Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim.

jman98, thanks for the info. I've heard that DVD+R and DVD-R can make a big difference, and I'm not very knowledgeable on what the difference is, but is one better than the other?

Historically DVD-R was preferred. Some very old DVD players could only read DVD+R if the book type was set to DVD-ROM when the disc was burned, but not all DVD writers allowed it. For a recent DVD or Blu-Ray player, both DVD+R and DVD-R work equally well. For dual layer media, you should only use Verbatim DVD+R DL.

Years ago there used to be players that had a strong preference for one format over the other and if you look around you can still find copies of old documents touting how one format is better than another, but modern players don't care and in practical terms there's no real difference. Now if you or relatives have old players that might have a preference, you'd probably be best served to go with DVD-R. But I usually just buy whatever is cheaper as I don't need to use ancient DVD players from 8+ years ago. If you want to just play the odds, buy DVD-R. DVD-R does have a very slightly higher capacity versus DVD+R in addition to being more compatible with most ancient DVD players.
